Re: Summer Holidays
How much beautiful Scottish scenery can you get in if you leave Edinburgh at lunchtime on a Sunday & be back by Wednesday morning.
I don't mind driving around all day.
The missus will want to see lakes, landscape and castles or basically any building over 100 years old
Any must sees greatly appreciated
Cheers

You paid 9k for a week??dasnutnock3 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 11, 2022 9:25 pm Couple days left on ile de re, lovely place, if a bit ****ing pricey. Rent for this gaff for a week was £9k. Bronzed crumpet as far as the eye can see.
I love Ile De Re
In Charente-Maritime at the moment and going to head to Fouras today for a day on the beach

Did I f*ck. Father in law set it all up, first time he’d seen his kids & grandkids since 2019. TBH I’d rather he’d have rented 3 places at 3K per week, but I can’t complain.Crouchend_Hammer wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 7:32 am You paid 9k for a week??

They have a house between Rouillac and Matha - very lovely, but VERY isolated.

My in laws place ia the other side of Matha, between there and St Jean D,Angely. Also pretty isolated although St Jean D'Angely is a lovely town and only 15 minutes drive away
There is a decent outdoor swimming pool at Matha

Re: Summer Holidays
Just came back from a lovely two weeks in Mykonos.
We've been a couple of times before and it's a great island with a fantastic main town and great beaches and sea, but it is becoming taken over by mega expensive beach clubs where a front row set of sunbeds can cost around 500 euros for the day (needless to say we didn't partake). No wonder its becoming popular with premier league footballers.
There are still some undeveloped beaches or beaches where renting sunbeds is at a reasonable price, but these are becoming few and far between sadly. We did a superb sea kayak tour with a local guy to the undeveloped north and he was getting worried about the super-rich buying up all the prime locations, although welcomed the huge recovery in tourism numbers to the island

Re: Summer Holidays
Got back last week from a road trip to north-east Scotland and managed a fair bit of the place. The drive was pretty easy and scenery was gloriousShabu wrote: ↑Tue Aug 23, 2022 11:29 pm How much beautiful Scottish scenery can you get in if you leave Edinburgh at lunchtime on a Sunday & be back by Wednesday morning.

Our route was;
Glasgow
Falkirk (Falkirk Wheel and Kelpies, a must)
Cairngorms National Park (stunning scenery)
Portmahomack (an hour NE of Inverness)
Chanonry Point, Fortrose (to watch dolphins)
Thurso
Loch Ness
Fort William
Glencoe (stunning scenery)
Loch Lomond
From Edinburgh, I’d go to Falkirk to see The Wheel ( and The Kelpies (https://www.thehelix.co.uk/), then drive up through the Cairngorms towards Inverness (maybe 3 hour drive). Stay somewhere around Inverness - depending when you are going, the area around Fortrose/Rosemarkie might be worth it if dolphins are there (https://www.moraydolphins.co.uk/chanonry-point.html) .
Drive back south alongside Loch Ness to Fort William, then to Glencoe (staying the night). Drive down through the glen and take a walk, then a night on Loch Lomond (Luss is picturesque).
Urquart Castle on Loch Ness should satisfy the castle requirement.
PM me if you want any further info.

Just booked two weeks in ‘Beefa again next year. Hopefully impending economic Armageddon won’t get in the way of it happening.

Re: Summer Holidays
Mrs RR has a conference to attend in Philly at the end of October and then down to HQ in Jacksonville. So I am going to tag along, see a pal in Philly who is going to take me down to DC and Georgetown, then from Jacksonville we are going to take 6 days off and go to St. Augustine, Melbourne, Boca Raton (or Ft Lauderdale), Key Largo and then back to South Beach.

I've worked & lived around there.RichieRiv wrote: ↑Sun Aug 28, 2022 5:33 pm Mrs RR has a conference to attend in Philly at the end of October and then down to HQ in Jacksonville. Opened the Trader Joe's at Jacksonville Beach. The beach is lovely, Jacksonville not so much.
If you can, stop at this place for lunch or dinner. Fantastic restaurant/bar opposite Burt Reynolds park in Jupiter (one of the nicest areas on the east coast of Florida). https://goo.gl/maps/BNUC1uYC44mTXsDu8
In Fort Lauderdale, near the beach, is Waxy's Irish Pub. Go & see my mate Andy who works there. Barking Boy & West Ham diehard who's been there decades. Great place for games or just drinking with a funny bunch. https://goo.gl/maps/ng1qTQU7cuWh1W5Y8
And the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (where I used to work) has been built like a giant glass guitar & it's phenomenal. Just breathtaking. Worth the ten minute drive inland from the beach.
If you have any questions feel free to ask, Richie

We did 2 weeks AI in GC in Maspalomas. Lovely hotel but bored with food and the drink by the end. Trouble is wife wants full break not cooking or washing etc. What put you off if I may ask?

Re: Summer Holidays
Possibly watching the young kids going into the swimming pool and taking a ****, thereby closing the pool. This happened 3 times in two weeks and despite regular warnings, I sat and watched the 'we dont care 'cos we're British and on holiday'' crowd take their kids in without a swimming nappy.bonzosbeard wrote: ↑Mon Sep 05, 2022 2:31 pm We did 2 weeks AI in GC in Maspalomas. Or maybe watching lunatics queue up at 7am to get a sun lounger and then nearly fight if they didn't get "their one". I saw this four times.
Perhaps the language used toward their kids within earshot of mine. "You ****ing little ****er" was a favourite. The young lad dropped an ice-cream and his half-cut dad in a Leeds shirt wasn't impressed.
But I think almost certainly watching hundreds of brits walking into a restaurant without washing their hands and using the same utensils to pile their plates into mini mountains of food they won't eat. Definitely the northern pig who I watched come out of the toilet and then shove his hands into the bowl of nachos as opposed to using the plastic glove and utensils provided.
Nah... not for me. Each to their own and all that, but frankly, I find the majority of the public disgracefully uncouth.
Already booked the villa in Marbella for next year.

Re: Summer Holidays
I’m like PF. If I can avoid it I like not dealing with other people’s bull**** on holiday. With the villa it is just me, the wife and kids, unless we are out and about, and if we are that is our choice. It also easier to ensure the kids aren’t eating complete **** morning, noon and night, which would be harder at an all inclusive.

Re: Summer Holidays
When I last flew to Malaga, I saw a number of chavs at Liverpool Airport and just knew it was Benidorm. Bolton tops, overweight women in skimpy clothes, Crimewatch e-fits etc.
My hotel didn’t even do food but there was a huge option of tapas everywhere plus a nice beach.

Re: Summer Holidays
Need some help from you lovely lot.
Would like to take the Mrs away for a few nights in December...somewhere in Europe.
Can anyone recommend somewhere with a superb Christmas market? Was possibly looking at Berlin but open to any suggestions.

Re: Summer Holidays
Only one I've visited was Strasbourg, but can recommend it.
In the Germany part of France you get all the culinary delicacies you'd expect and a Teutonic twist with Schnapps, Black Forest gateaux and sausages galore. Strasbourg itself is surprisingly ancient with lots of little squares dotted through the centre lined with tall wooden buildings. When all lit up with Christmas lights it makes a suitably festive backdrop for a stroll along the canals and up to the impressive cathedral.
