Powerful article from today's Guardian suggesting why the USA is such a messed up basket case.

Excellent article. This is my main takeaway

So we need to change the system. That means that when we speak of gun control, we need to speak of campaign finance reform, to prevent a heartless and deadly industry from buying a protective shield of venal congressmen who exist to block any bills that might save lives at the cost of reducing profits. When we speak of gun control, we need to speak of ending gerrymandering, so that political minorities cannot consolidate power in ways that prevent desperately needed reforms from being passed.

When we speak of gun control, we need to speak of how the existence of the US Senate gives white, rural states disproportionate power, and we need to speak of how the cynical pleas for “civility” towards the powerful serve to insulate them from the consequences of their own policies, and we need to speak of how unregulated capitalism has allowed behemoth tech companies to suck so much money out of the journalism industry that the public doesn’t hear these things spoken about much at all.

Yup. 40% budget and when their moment came they ****ed up.

Had it been one black kid in a car with a broken tail light I'm sure they would have sorted it pronto.

Those poor kids. They're calling 911 from the classroom. Their calls get answered but nothing happens. Nothing.

They just get to sit there terrified & wait for their turn to die.

Putting a like to this doesn't feel quite right. I'm right behind you with it though.

Apparently, with incredible survival instinct, one 11 yr old girl smeared herself in another child's blood so that she could convincingly play dead.

I read that, & if it's the same one, she was met outside by a man with paramedic training who went to help her & she said "It's not my blood. It's my best friend Amarie. She got shot".

And it was the medics daughter who'd died.

It's just heartbreak on top of heartbreak on top of heartbreak. And further sickening is that they won't f*cking do anything.

It's mind boggling that the GOP's and NRA's solution to preventing mass shootings at schools is to arm teachers, add armed guards and bring in armed police to patrol school grounds when they have banned guns from their own convention out of fear of someone getting shot.

I agree with you about America.

I live in California & have asked plenty of my friends & colleagues if they'd support California separating from America & the VAST majority are in favour.

We're known as Commiefornia to much of America for a reason. We're more like Western Europe than them.

Unfortunately, you can still buy these killing weapons elsewhere & drive a few hours to be here.

And when I go to Mexico (or England) I always have well meaning Americans telling me to "be careful"

In 2004, a ten-year federal ban on assault weapons expired, and since then mass shootings have tripled.

There were ‘only’ about 400,000 AR-15 style rifles in America before the assault weapons ban went into effect in 1994.

Today, there are 20 million.

Of course this will now be used to explain why it's necessary to arm everyone.

The massive difference being they're not American, so like people of other nations, can be trusted not to shoot up schools with their weapons......

It's an argument for both sides. If AR15s weren't so readily available & abundant in the US he wouldn't have been firing at the party anyway.
