Re: Running
A question for all you weirdos:
When do the endorphins kick in? When I used to run, as part of my rowing training, I don't recall ever feeling good, neither during nor after running, apart from the "Thank christ that's finished" feeling of relief.

Re: Running
I don't know but I think I may be a bit of a masochist. I've never been completely satisfied with any hike or run I've done unless my legs are in pain for at least 2 days afterwards. The more torture I inflict upon myself, the fonder the memories are of that particular hike or run.Toulouse_Iron wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 7:06 pm A question for all you weirdos:

Re: Running
Yeah the whole drop thing confuses me a bit. I'm not actually sure what suits me the most. As I've always hiked and never ran up until a year ago, I suspect that I've always been quite used to a large drop. Nowadays, my everyday shoes and road running shoes are about 7-8mm drop. My trail runners are 4mm. The ones I'm looking at buying are zero. I seem to run in both the 8mm and the 4mm just fine. Sometimes I get sore shins or ankles but that doesn't seem to relate to the footwear. Sometimes it happens in the 8mm, sometimes in the 4mm. It relates more to the length of the run and the amount of hills.

Re: Running
I always get the biggest buzz when I have a proper good day. One of those days where the weight you struggled with last week suddenly feels easy, or when yesterday’s laboured 6 mile is replaced by an inexplicably smooth and easy 12 miler.
I’m led to believe that PEDs make every day feel like one of those good days, no matter how fatigued you’d expect to be without them. Could be wrong, but I got to know a few lads who liked to take something extra on their cornflakes and that was their general assessment.

Re: Running
I am not sure to be honest, but I remember that long time ago in my 20s I was struggling a lot to find any pleasure in running, and that running mates told me to just run and something is going to click in my head and I will start enjoying it. Never happened in that time. Years later, when doctor said "mate, you have still lot of years before you, but you really need to loose 30kg if you want to enjoy them", I started running again, and this time somehow I like it. I do not feel anything like extra shot of dopamine or something, it's more like I feel I need to go out and run after 2 days of not doing it. Weird it is, defo.Toulouse_Iron wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 7:06 pm A question for all you weirdos:

For me, after about 15-20 min, for a period of time it felt easier than the first 15-20 min.Toulouse_Iron wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 7:06 pm A question for all you weirdos:

Didn't last too long though...

Re: Running
Cheers Burnley and szola.
Largely academic for me now, as my left leg has forgotten how to run . I tried again the other day and, whilst the 10 metres I "Ran" would , technically have got me disqualified from a speed-walking event, it was both hideous to watch and painful to carry out.

Re: Running
Cascadia are decent but I moved away from Brooks and use Saucony Peregrine's. Have a look at the run testers on youtube I know one of them and they do thorough non bias reviewsBurnley Hammer wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 6:13 pm Looks like their could be supply issues with the new speedgoat 5's - especially the wide fit which I need. I'm not sure how patient I am. I need high cushioning due to my crap feet so the alternatives I'm looking at now are:
Altra Olympus 4
Brooks Cascadia 16
Hoka Mafate Speed 3
Has anyone ever used any of the above? I've favouring the Cascadia as it comes with a rock plate - but annoyingly that's the only one out of the three that isn't offering a pay in 3 installments option

Re: Running
Seeing as I couldn't get hold of any Speedgoat 5 wide fit, I decided to risk the standard fit. They're free to return so I have nothing to lose by giving it a go. If it turns out to be too narrow in the toe box, I'll give the Hoka Mafate 3 Speed a go. I've also looked at some of the New Balance shoes and they might do the job too. I have been using the Decathlon MT Cushion trail runners, which were a bit heavyweight and despite being really comfy at first, the foam seems to have deteriorated quite quickly and there's nowhere near as much cushioning there now 6 months later. The outsoles a bit soft too and can feel rocks poking into my feet quite easily.
Re: Running
Have started my pre-16 week marathon training this week. First miles in on road since busting my ankle in Sept 2020. Carrying a bit of extra timber, nothing huge but prob need to shift 3 KG's.
3km on Weds and 4.5km at lunch today. Legs felt heavy and I gave up 0.5km from the end, which was hard to do. All this from pretty much being ready to go for the 2020 London Marathon only for Covid to cancel it. I'd got up to 17 miles for the training for that and could knock out 10km at lunch with absolute ease in around 50mins. Feeling pretty deflated that I cannot even muster 5km together atm but hard work and sweat and tears (hopefully no blood) will hopefully see me through. Just hope the ligaments hold up. Eight weeks of crutches and moon boot is not something I want again.

Hoka Speedgoat 5's arrived today.... Hoka Speedgoat 5's going straight back!
They taper too much at the front and my weird feet don't fit in properly. I feel a bit sad now.

Re: Running
Anyone here run in New Balance shoes using the Fresh Foam X midsoles?
My shortlist is now down to two, including the Fresh Foam X Hierro v7's. My concern is the durability... I've bought cheaper max cushioned trail shoes before where the foam has just compressed and lost half of its cushioning before I've even done 300k with them. I could do with some verification that the foam lasts. The other ones I've looked at are the Altra Olympus 4's... I'm a bit concerned though after a couple of reviewers said that cushioning hasn't lasted as long as expected.

Never really got on with NB personally. Have a look at the runtesters on YouTube they review shoes and I personally know one of them and they are really honestBurnley Hammer wrote: ↑Sat May 28, 2022 10:49 am Anyone here run in New Balance shoes using the Fresh Foam X midsoles?

Re: Running
It's a good channel - they haven't quite tested everything I've looked at though.BrisbaneRoad wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 5:30 pm Never really got on with NB personally. Have a look at the runtesters on YouTube they review shoes and I personally know one of them and they are really honest
Yeah... they were front runners in my shortlist but I think I've decided against them. The Hierro v7's looked to have improved the traction from the v6 but still not quite what I wanted. They seem mainly suitable for easy trails and gravel paths. The cushioning (fresh foam x) seemed superb and the foam has clearly been tested by many over long distances, but I'm just not sure they'd be durable enough for the kind of tracks I'd be planning on doing. A few customers complained about the uppers tearing after only a few uses, and issues with the eyelet.
I also looked at the Topo Ultraventure Pro. They have a great big toebox like the Altras but reviewers said they were just a little too firm and rigid, and it looks as though they're aimed at those that would also like to use them for hiking too. A few runners that tested complained of discomfort after 10 miles or so.
The Altra Olympus 4 seemed perfect... except they're zero drop. I need something ready to use straight away for long runs and don't want to spend months adjusting to zero drop shoes.
So.... the current front-runners and the ones I'll likely go for after Hoka refund me, are the Inov-8 TrailFly Ultra G 300.
You wouldn't believe how many hours I've put into researching this over the last week! Would have been far easier just to go to a shop and try all these on but no local shop sold any of the ones on my shortlist. I don't like buying expensive things... I always feel under so much pressure to get it right.

Nothing wrong with that mate. It's important to try and get it right, as it your body that will potentially suffer if you don't!Burnley Hammer wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 5:51 pm
