all I honestly care about (in the big picture) is that he made us relevant for loads of people like me.

people who "turned off" bothering mainly due to the cocks that we had playing for us and their attitude. the manager in most cases didn't help that image.

I have several criticisms about his game management at times, but all credit due, I look forward to watching us play, I really like the players who play for us, obviously not generally when they're paying again West Ham, but I can't fault people like Kane who always seems to play for the team. McGuire who despite all of his critics, usually turns in pretty good all around performances for the national team, Sterling who I really think has severe limitations in his general thinking inside the 18, I'm not even fond of Pickford, but honestly when they pull the shirt on, how they come across in national team interviews, their body language toward each other when they play for us, Southgate has brought that to the table.

bit of a summation was Henderson's goal yesterday. he hasn't been playing much for his club, hasn't played much for the national team, but he didn't hide yesterday. when he scored what was a really good goal, the players all seemed happy, not only for the goal, which is an initial reaction, but they genuinely seemed over the moon for the bloke.

now of course these are just my observations and based on nothing much other than I look forward to us playing whereas I didn't particularly before Gareth came along.

Indeed. I actually think you can draw some parallels with Moyes when you compare his WHU record to that of our previous managers in the top flight and Europe from the last 35 years.

Cuenca - spot on, exactly how I, and I suspect a lot of people, feel about the international team now.

It really was difficult to like anyone on the field for a long period of time, then eventually when all the interviews from past players talk of each team having a table at meal times, players of different clubs not mixing at all etc etc.....it really showed on the field. Maybe this crop of youngsters is just more likeable.

I struggle with his tactics/selections/subs at times, we have been pretty dull to watch, on too many occasions.

However, his tournament record speaks for itself really, and I have huge respect for the job he has done, he's created an environment that players now want to be apart of, he's brought a club mentality into the setup, and even if we don't win a trophy under his stewardship, he has laid the foundations and will leave a legacy which will stand us in good stead for many years to come.

Completely agree S-H, however there won't be a better time to win one than over the next decade. We have an abundance of young talent coming through while most nations (but not all, unfortunately) are still relying on the old guard with little to replace them.

I was discussing this with a mate; why are there far fewer world class players now? A decline in quality coming through, or has the overall bar been raised? Maybe a golden generation of players?
