Listen if it weren't for Allardyce being so crooked England would never have been in that final last night.

Re: Who SHOULD Be England Manager?
Southgate is untouchable, and legitimately so. When you think of Roy Hodgson tenure, he returned a QF exit at Euro 2012, a first round seat at the 2014 WC, and a second round exit at the next Euros. Capello had one major tournament and it was a flop. SGE had two WC Quarter Finals and a Euro QF on his CV and had his exit.
Its a long long time since somebody has achieved anything close to what Southgate has, and that gives him clear day between any pressure being put on him, and it will almost certainly last into the 2022 WC in Qatar, and enough goodwill will have him, in place until Euro 2024. Its a moot discussion.

Re: Who SHOULD Be England Manager?
Even a disaster in Qatar won't see Southgate go so he's got at least two tournaments more to build on this. There's a hell of a squad to play with here with the exception of centre backs where I think England are slightly lacking in depth when it comes to international/Champions League class players. As I've said in other threads, the only issue is there's other countries improving too, also with this relative success comes pressure.

Re: Who SHOULD Be England Manager?
The press pissed Robson off to the point he quit, Taylor got even worse media treatment, so they bowed to public pressure and brought in El Tel who gave us 2 great results & then buggered off before getting caught in something iffy or other, which is what happened to his successor (Hoddle and disabled kids), before Wor Kev came in and decided he didn’t “love it” after all.
We then got Sven who specialised in losing from a lead in quarter finals (alongside getting his leg over) and the waste of the most talented group of individuals this country had ever seen. After Swedish meatballs, the press lead a charge for an England Manager who was English, so we got the Wally with the Brolly, when that failed, the golf jumpers said “told you so”, and Postino Pat came in to give us endless 0-0 games.
When it turned out that playing the Italian way without Baggio wasn’t to the public’s taste, we went back on the golf course and good old Woy proved we hadn’t yet seen the worst and that Sheffield marching band could be outdone for annoyance by losing to Iceland.
Allardyce. Then they employed Sam. Allardyce.
Then cometh the waistcoats.
EVERYTHING since the waistcoats has been better than almost EVERTYHING that happened, 1991-2017, in this list.
We had Gazza and we didn’t even qualify for World Cups. We endlessly watched his goal against Scotland and repeats of a 5-1 win against Germany and 4-1 against Netherlands. That was it.
A World Cup semi and a Euros final.
He should be offered a 10 year contract.

Re: Who SHOULD Be England Manager?
I think I'm right in saying that the England program that Sir Trev was hired to create a decade ago is still ahead of the development curve. I don't think the plan had England being in a final yet. Anyhow, Southgate has been at the center of the process of creating the infrastructure and culture of the current program. I don't think it would be a great idea to remove this cog from this machine at the moment. But maybe getting some tactically astute coaches and advisors who are proven tournament winners to surround the gaffer with would be a good idea.

Re: Who SHOULD Be England Manager?
I am obviously in the minority, which is fair enough, but for me Southgate is a flat track bully. When it comes to bigger, in form, teams he regularly fails. He is far too conservative for me. If he learns from his mistakes then great, but he didn't from the last world cup did he?. Obviously he is a very nice bloke, good with the players, his bosses and press etc. etc. and I do like him, but not as England manager.
Who else then? Personally, I believe there are loads out there who would make better use of our 'golden' young talent and look to win with a dollop of pragmatism but huge dollops of flair. I would even advocate Lampard to join him as his number two with a view to taking over post Qatar.
I 100% hope I am wrong about him and am more than happy to eat humble pie when he wins the World Cup.

Lampard...christ.
Keep as many of that "golden generation" away as possible.
In regards to recent England gaffers, couldn't stand Capello. Totally the wrong fit.

Re: Who SHOULD Be England Manager?
As for a potential next manager, there quite literally is no one English out there. Feels like another result of the Premier League, its ever increasing financial clout seems to have made clubs shy away from appointing promising English managers from lower leagues and instead just get in someone from overseas. This in turn means English managers don't tend to have a chance to manage in high pressure games/situations and so doesn't bode well for when we get a replacement England manager at some point.
Could appoint a foreign one, but I really am not a fan of that. As Southgate has shown and others before him, club and country management are completely different.

Re: Who SHOULD Be England Manager?
Have to say it, but id be absolutely stunned if he isn't next in line, even if his number won't come up for a few years, and will likely have another job in the interim. He ticks so many of the boxes, and very few England manager have been festooned with awards, often relying on more general attributes. In this instance, it would be the often touted involvement in the development of a raft of young English players at Chelsea, Derby's play-off defeat, and being an FA Cup finalist.

If Lampard is suggested I'd say Gerrard could equally be in with a shout. God, just when England became likeable again.

Re: Who SHOULD Be England Manager?
Gareth should be manager, as he has more than achieved his remit. However, I feel he has benefitted from massive luck, and that he will be the reason England fail to progress going forward. Perhaps he will suddenly find some love of attacking football, but I seriously doubt it!

If he was a boxer, he would be prime Chris Eubank. Defensive and unwilling to commit, but due to overachieving in years gone by he gets to hold the belt for years and make a fortune walloping tomato cans!Diogenes wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 8:26 pm I am obviously in the minority, which is fair enough, but for me Southgate is a flat track bully. The irony of, erm... ironing board, criticising Southgate for his style of play..
Priceless.
Priceless.
