Steam Deck

This looks promising. More powerful than a PS4, out this Christmas.

Saw that yesterday - seemed a bit pricey, especially if you want some onboard storage. Be interesting to see how it compares with the switch, which is still selling big numbers.

I’m just not sold on the idea of a portable x86 device that can also be hooked up to a monitor or TV, I doubt it has the horsepower to be an effective console/desktop substitute. Guess you could say the same about laptops, I suppose.

Hopefully it'll be better than the Steam Controller and Steam Link, which were pretty useless.

Their VR gear was relatively well-received, as is my understanding, so they’ve clearly got some chops where hardware is concerned. But given that the laptop I just bought with better specs and a lower price, can’t help thinking their price point isn’t competitive enough.

This is a decent summary of Valve's hardware up to now. Being kind, you might say they have a chequered history.

Initial reviews with some embargo’s lifted make this look rather appealing. Don’t go spending yet, but definitely moving in the right direction:

As a matter of interest, does steam work on a subscription basis like Game Pass, or is it a game store that allows you to purchase games individually? I’ve always been able to get hold of PC games for “free” and wouldn’t be interested in getting locked into paying for them individually. I wouldn’t have bought an Xbox if gamepass wasn’t a core part of the platform, and I seriously doubt I’ll ever buy anything to play in it that Isn’t in GP.

Boo, then. I might dip in once "the community" has had a chance to do something with it, but no way am I shelling out for something I have to then pay to use.

I pay for gamepass because it’s £3.50 a month and grants access to (supposedly) £6.5k’s worth of games. I can’t bring myself to buy console games, even at a discount, but I’m comfortable with paying for gamepass at that price.

It is bargainous.

If you like free stuff and haven't done so previously check out Epic as they give away a free PC game (or sometimes more) every week. My free library now stands at 165 games. Amazon Prime too, if you're a subscriber.

How does the amazon thing work? My son has a gaming PC, so might be of interest to him. TIA.

If you're an Amazon Prime subscriber HIMH, the games come as part of the package. It's just not so widely advertised.
