Britain's First Non White Sports Star?

Post by Shabu »

Was just watching a video of Prince Naz & thinking "was he the UKs first Asian sports star?" Unless you count Sebastian Coe

Which led me to "Who were the first UK non white stars?"

Obviously there were many footballers but were they big stars in their own right?

Then I was thinking Frank Bruno but before him was my childhood hero, Daley Thompson.

So is it Daley or were there others I don't know about?

The first I can remember was a Leeds United winger called Albert Johanieson. He was a black South African and ****ing dynamite on their left wing and would really rip it up down their left flank. He played for them in the 50's and early 60's. This, at a time, when there were no other black players in the English game and, although it sounds racist today, people would stare if they saw a black man in the streets, but this bloke was absolutely ****ing terrific

James Peters (Rugby Union) – 1879-1954. James ‘Jimmy’ Peters was born in 1879 in Salford, Lancashire, to a Jamaican father and an English mother. He became the first Black rugby player to play rugby union for England in 1906, and shockingly was the only Black England player until 1988

Andrew Watson (24 May 1856 – 8 March 1921) was a Scottish footballer who is widely considered to be the world's first black person to play association football at international level.

In April 1880 he signed for Queen's Park – then Britain's largest football team – and became their secretary in November 1881. He led the team to two consecutive Scottish Cup wins in 1881 and 1882, thus becoming the first black player to win a major competition.

In 1882, he moved to London and became the first black player to play in the English Cup when he turned out for Swifts. In 1883, he was the first foreign player to be invited to join the leading amateur club in England, the Corinthians. His time there included an 8–1 victory against Blackburn Rovers, who were at that time the English Cup holders.
