Amused that Benitez thinks the six-yard box is for the protection of the goalkeeper. Haven't noticed that one in The Laws of Association Football. Anyway, we were vastly superior, although they were poor. Hope Soucek recovers well from the boot in the face, typically he's not making a fuss.

Not a lot to do with us - we dominated most of the game v Brentford, and large spells v Everton.irving boleyn wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 7:00 pm Wondering why we randomly lose at home to Brentford and then win away at Everton.
Lack of a pressing game by Everton?
Declan returning to his deeper role?
Bounce of the ball?
Brentford were better than Everton in terms of taking their chances, and Pickford is rubbish.
He kicked the ball straight out of play twice and ballsed up three crosses - pretty much every single one that he was called upon to deal with. He's shockingly bad.
Biggest concern for us is that Bowen seems to be the only one capable of making the opposition keeper work in spite of all this possession.

What a block that was by Zouma at the death. He's been a little bit underwhelming at times but that was top notch.

Yes, Zouma's best game to date. He was solid and stuck to defending. Ogbonna also made a good block from Iwobi in the second half and the so-called 'sitter' than Iwobi aimed an air-shot at would have been blocked by Johnson, imo.
Having said that, Everton blocked eight shots by us yesterday. Some of ours need to work better space, they just seemed to shoot when it was always likely that the block was on.

There seems to be a trend where we have trouble getting through sides that sit back and are happy to let us have possession. Everton yesterday, Brentford, Leeds, Fulham last season to name but a few. They settle for the point at kick off knowing how dangerous we are on the break and challenge us to break through their lines, where we can struggle. We have individual players who are more than capable but I still feel thay aren't quite on the same wavelength as the others. Passes going to where the runner has just been, passes played expecting a run that doesn't come and so on.
More work needed on the training ground.

Hopefully it works the opposite way and we get some joy against the 'better' sides. We play Tottenham, Man City, Liverpool & Chelsea in four of our next six league games.Johnny Byrne's Boots wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 8:46 pm There seems to be a trend where we have trouble getting through sides that sit back and are happy to let us have possession. Zouma was very impressive yesterday, controlled our line very well and is clearly starting to settle in now.bubbles1966 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 8:28 pm Yes, Zouma's best game to date. I think he's getting it confused with the "service area" at the end of the bar reserved for the waiters.Ticker Boyce wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 7:36 pm Amused that Benitez thinks the six-yard box is for the protection of the goalkeeper. Haven't noticed that one in The Laws of Association Football.

He's a Champions League winner FFS not an outdated, redundant stereotype. A bit more respect on all forms of social media wouldn't go amissAlbie Beck wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 11:26 pm I think he's getting it confused with the "service area" at the end of the bar reserved for the waiters.

Pickford is very good. His save from Bowen was outstanding. But we pressed his weakness and got a reward.bubbles1966 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 8:19 pm Not a lot to do with us - we dominated most of the game v Brentford, and large spells v Everton.

What’s that got to do with him being “rubbish?” He is clearly nothing of the sort.Albie Beck wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 11:48 pm If he's so ****ing great he really ought to be more up on the Laws of the Game then.

Think he was referring to Rafa not Pickford.
Anyway, Pickford is poor. He’s a flapper.
You seem on the wind up sometimes. A couple of days ago it was Duff being much better than Joe Cole.
Your encyclopaedic knowledge seems strangely centred on Glasgow and the NW. Wonder why?

Damien Duff did have a higher peak than Joe Cole. Chelsea were at their best with Duff, Robben and Drogba. They were an absolute football machine then.Doc H Ball wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 12:03 am Think he was referring to Rafa not Pickford.

Apologies to Albie for picking him up wrong. But Pickford was he of the best players in the Euros. A very good argument for being the best goalkeeper of the tournament. Perhaps it is the central defense that is the problem, as he is awfully exposed?

Cole won more and played more.
I think his goal at the WC was a higher peak than Duff reached, but it was more the point that you randomly chose another Celtic player to compare with an ex W Ham one, again.
Pickford did have a good Euros, against expectation. On Sunday though you could see him flap around a few times and lose his concentration. Even their own fans concede he’s way off being a top PL player.

Damien Duff never played for Celtic! And Cole may have had moments of greater skill, but he was never effective in the way Duff was at his peak. He was so fast, skillful and aggressive.Doc H Ball wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 12:19 am Cole won more and played more.

Joe was always more of a rotation player for Chelsea. He was a key squad member, and did stay there much longer though. They were both top players, but I don’t think it is a coincidence that Duff was a main player when Chelsea had that momentous season under Mourinho.

How the league is not doing something about Rondon stamping on Soucek's face is a disgrace.
