I am reading/hearing that a lot about Arsenal and the Man C game, they still lost even though they shouldn't have, which is very modern Arsenal still, then had a shocker at Forest.

For sure Arteta has them on the right road, no argument there, I still think they have many more questions to be answered yet.

Still believe we'll need to be Leicester-type lucky with injuries to be able to grab fourth.

Competing on multiple fronts doesn't help, and having our best players playing International games isn't a bonus either.
In part I agree and actually think that our chances of top 4 are improved if we go out of EL in the last 16 phase.

It's obvious, to me, that Rice has given the nod to be included as much as is possible, fitness and availability, in mind.

However, we continue to need intensity of play, not simply against Barca or Lazio - crazy as it is to type that - but also in the games below that, in my mind, we must by and large win, to get to 4th

1. Wolves (h)
2. Leics (a)
3. Brighton (a)
4. Villa (h)
5. Everton (h).

15 points from those allows us to be content with draws against Man U, Spurs and Arsenal.

However, as I say, that leads to those league games becoming vital to our league prospects.

...unless of course we take a different route to the CL, via the EL!! :starst:

I don’t understand the obsession with 4th.

We want to win the Europa, that’s what will be talked about in 20 years.

It goes without saying that the further we go in Europa and the FA Cup the less chance we have of finishing 4th, even if we go out in the next of both competitions I still think finishing 4th is unlikely. To have any chance we need around a 6 point cushion going in to our last 11 games where we have:

Away
Liverpool
Tottenaham
Chelsea
Brighton

Home
Arsenal
Man City

The problem with those suggesting we don't need a striker in Jan or any reinforcements is that we won't be able to rotate in the later stages of the Europa and FA Cup like we have in the earlier stages, particularly in the Europa. If we want to fight on multiple fronts at the business end of the season we 100% need another striker and likely another defender.

I'd like to win the europa, but to win it we will have to beat top quality opposition in every game. To get to fourth we will need to beat some mediocre opposition and some good ones. Both results (love to get both) will give us champions league qualification, which puts us in with the so-called elite. Much as I'd like to see silverware, establishing ourselves as a real force must be the priority. We've had too many fleeting moments over the last 50 years that evaporate like snow in springtime. Depressing stat: in their 100+ year history West Ham United have finished in the top 6 of the top division a grand total of SIX times.

Starting to think I’ll be disappointed if we don’t either get top 4, win the Europa or the FA Cup.

Of those 3 the Europa would be my first choice by some distance.

I think we have a better chance of doing well in the league if we stay in the cups. Momentum is probably the most important thing we have right now. We lost it a little bit over Xmas but now seems to have returned. A couple of losses in the cups would see mood drop, which will have an impact on team morale and league performances.

Yep never got the ‘prioritising’ the League over the Cup stuff. Always been a load of baloney.

Seeing West Ham win a trophy of any kind (in my lifetime) would allow me to die a happy man.

I agree, and would love to win the Europa League or FA Cup this season.

That being said, Champion's League qualification and the money and prestige that follows could allow us to kick on. That's how Tottenham did it way back when, they unearthed a gem like Bale or Modric (Rice and Bowen), and used them to qualify for the Champion's League.

If we stay in the cups we will have to rotate in the league at some point as a trophy is out priority. Yes momentum is good but going out of the Europa in the last 16 for example that wouldn't stop our momentum if we were still doing well in the league imo.

I'd be amazed if Moyes doesn't rotate against Kidderminster. Got to be nailed on surely.

The Betway Cup marketing team will remember this sleight on their good name.

I was cold last night on the slow journey back to the south coast. I sat behind a group of disgruntled Spurs fans to take some reflected warmth from their angst.

Maybe I caught something?

We’ve just got to focus on getting things right over the next three weeks – just two fixtures against Leeds and Man U, plus a transfer window to deal with any difficulties, mitigate risks and strengthen if possible.

The fag end of the season will be littered with fixtures against the distracted, the demotivated and the demob happy so previously predictable games start to become susceptible to these factors.

Random injuries and suspensions will seem more important.

To add to the above if we progress in the Europa League and FA Cup this is how it could affect our run in. If we make it to the quarter finals of both competitions the fixture congestion is going to be significant with is why we need 2 signings this window.

League games after Europa Rounds
Last 16 first leg, Villa (h)
Last 16 second leg, Tottenham (a)
Quarter final first leg, Brentford (h)
Quarter final second leg, Burnley (a)
Semi final first leg, Arsenal (h)
Semi final second leg, Norwich (a)
Final, Brighton (a)

League games after FA Cup Rounds
Fifth round, Liverpool (a)
Quarter finals, clashes with Tottenham (a)
Semi finals, clashes with Burnley (h)
Final, clashes Man City (a)

Granny Shagger gets a 3 (?) game ban for arsenal - Partey in Africa along with Pepe, Aubameyang etc.

Spurs should beat them at the weekend.
