Great read, thanks for sharing...
The way ex footballers were treated back in the day was truly shameful, nowadays even the crap ones are multi millionaires...
Sir Geoff still going strong though, let's hope he has a good few years in him... 🤞

It was shameful Dublin. I've worked in sales when young , but generally it's a young person's game and it felt to me he had to put up with indignity as a national hero.

His daughters death is a tragedy and most of us have had family losses and we forget that players still have real lives like the rest of us.

I found it sad in some bits but inspirational and was a great interview. Weirdly his granddaughter calling a Knight of the realm Geoff was the bit I take away most. The future, the continuing funny moments in our lives, and the ability to not take ourselves too seriously.

Sir Geoff, even though you were just before my time you are one of our most amazing hero's.

Always remember collecting and getting my colour ty-phoo tea 10 x 8 photo of Sir Geoff (and later Bobby and Martin). Geoff’s achievements in an era when money hadn’t ruined the game was inspirational. How much would he be worth these days when in his prime?

I remember watching him play early days as a wing half I think. He then got moved up top. Even back then we didn’t buy established CF.
All the best that man. You inspired thousands of young players for years. I was Geoff many times on the parks in Sunday league.
👍

I’d happily sign a birthday card for him (for a tenner).

Geoff Hurst is a West Ham and England Legend , and at 80 years of age the only surviving member of the Famous Trio -

Imagine an England player now scoring a hat trick in a World Cup Final - he wouldn't be playing for West Ham that's for sure and if he did he wouldn't be staying with them for most of his career . He was my hero along with Martin Peters and Bobby Moore and he scored some brilliant goals for us - I can still remember a volley of his from such an acute angle I thought there was no way he could score but he did - he'd be worth millions and earning millions these days .

I couldn't give a damn whether he charges a tenner for his autograph , it'd only be sold on Ebay for 10 x that anyway - so good luck to the man - would you prefer he had to sell his World Cup medal like some other players from that era did ?

Spot on ToMoS :newthumb:

FWIW I have an England 1966 shirt and copy of his autobiography signed by the great man, both gifts, neither of which to my knowledge required any additional payments.

Happy Birthday Sir Geoff!!

Great piece Paul, I agree with every sentiment expressed and to see the plain facts of Geoff's goal scoring laid out as you have will help those who never saw him put him in proper context as West Hams greatest ever and England's most important forward.
His hattrick in the '66 WC winning England side will mark him out forever in World Football as a great, but one thing that I noticed from that game and that doesn't get a lot of mention was his work rate, running in behind, pulling wide, dropping off deep dragging opposition defenders into places they didn't want to be all over the pitch, and dishing out a bit of stick in challenges, Geoff was a very athletic player, akin to Alan Shearer in not being the biggest, but very powerful and aggressive. Sir Geoff says, in all humility, that he was not the most gifted player, and that he worked hard to make up for that. I guess when playing in teams that had Bobby Moore, Martin Peters, Budgie Byrne, Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves even someone like Sir Geoff might seem themselves as less gifted, thankfully, Ron Greenwood and Sir Alf saw the whole man and how he fitted into their vision of winning team.

Agree - and it was his understanding with other players too. Almost telepathic with Moore and Peters, for us and England.

He looks in good shape and I hope he is able to watch some great West Ham performances in the future including cup wins and Euro success.

Hurst's obituary for Greaves

In 1956-57, as a youth player, he scored 114 goals in that one season. His stats as a first-team striker at Chelsea were also stunning: 132 goals in 169 games.
