Less gas for Central Europe won’t be much fun.

I'm guessing those sanctions will have more of an impact on the rest of Europe than they will on Putin.
Exactly. What will he do about supplying gas?

The septics can sanction all they like, doesn't mean the EU will.

If they invade I'm willing to wager that there will be EU sanctions, which the Germans will have had a strong hand in putting together.

That doesn't prevent them issuing sanctions. They know they will have to take some pain here.

Russia also has to think about the medium to long term implications of providing gas to the European market. If they become so unreliable that you either kill a load of Europe's industry or Europe builds a load more LNG import capacity. That may not be something that concerns Putin as he is focused on the here and now, but Russia has enjoyed bullying people via commodities for a long, long time. Having a reduced ability to do so in the future will have an impact in them.

It's Russia and Putin we're talking about. Here and now is all he cares about.

Most Russians I have met generally have that perception. Could well be something to do with their past, or maybe the weather? But in my experience a lot of people from that neck of the woods are generally quite fatalistic.

I'm not sure that he does. The man is incredibly wealthy. A large part of his wealth stems from Russian assets. If there is disquiet in Russia and he loses power, or if those assets lose value, he becomes poorer.

Surely this is all about staying in power? Everyone loves a war (as long as they win) or sabre rattle?

Edit - also you're looking at this through the eyes of a democracy, its not like that over there, some events are still recent and the mentality of a lot of people have been molded by those events. That's what I mean by fatalistic.

It wont be much fun for every day Russians either, as a combination of sanctions and less money into the country from gas sales to Europe will make them poorer.

Of course, Putin will blame it all on the west regardless.

Our comrades across the town at Stamford Bridge might be seeing their little cos-play turn as a 'big club' coming to an end rather abruptly

It's a funny old world...

In 1919 when Poland decided to expand its territories and invaded parts of Lithuania , Belarus and Ukraine the UK sided with Russia while keeping an eye on Ukraine's oil fields , France on the other hand backed Poland [ they fancied taking on the Red Army using Poland as its base ] .

By the end of this conflict 10,000 Poles and 15,000 Ukrainians lay dead -

In the meantime France took control of the Eastern Galicia oil fields ........until Ukrainian/Soviet Troops took them back on the 17th September 1939 .

And on it goes .

As long as there's still petrol at the Broadford Garage I'm not that bothered what the Russians do in Ukraine .

Don't think this will end very well for Putin or Russia. Ukraine will put up very stiff resistance to any invasion and not sure what Russia will stand to gain from it and deep down I think he knows that

Time to dust this one off:

Vladimir Putin lands at Kiev airport and goes through customs.

Customs: Name?
Putin: Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin
Customs: Occupation?
Putin: No, just visiting.
