Re: Russian invasion of Ukraine
Been reading today about the protests in Germany and other countries demanding an end to sending kit to Ukraine and end the war through negotiations. Very laudable but unbelievably naive....I do wonder what goes through these people's brains.
I also see some of Jeremy's closer allies like McDonnell and Clive Lewis have been speaking out to encourage speedier military support to Ukraine....

Re: Russian invasion of Ukraine
The French protest didn’t seem especially large. In Germany the rally was led by Santa Wagenknecht, a clown who has been wrong on this conflict before. There is undoubtedly a ‘fig-leaf’ peace and neutrality position, which reverts to the the tired old tropes of blaming NATO and the US when Russia invaded a sovereign state.

Yeah, a lot of these 'peace' rallies have people waving Russian flags and wearing the Z symbol. And many of the people calling for peace are only doing so because Russia is losing and needs to lock in its gains. Five or ten years from now when Russia has rebuilt its military and invades again, this lot will be cheering them on again.

Re: Russian invasion of Ukraine
Ended up watching a video of a ‘peace and neutrality’ rally in Dublin at the weekend. Criticism of NATO, Zelensky, America, Ireland, Britain, and the refrain of ‘Free Julian Assange’ could be heard. Demands for diplomacy and negotiation were vociferous. But noticable in its absence was any reference to Putin or Russia, or any material efforts to decry the invasion. At the end of the day, some people just default to criticising America, as it’s easy, and their ‘home turf.’ This is the narrative the peaceniks have created in order to avoid criticising anybody but the west. It’s shallow and transparent. And it’s why nobody takes their refrains seriously.

Re: Russian invasion of Ukraine
A further delve into the Europe wide rallies would suggest that there is undoubtedly a wider agenda at play for those who demand ‘peace talks’, ‘negotiation’, and cool heads. They have take a proposition that, at face value, nobody can disagree with. But once you delve into the geo-political aspects at play, you realise that their refrain is disingenuous at best, and at worst is a camouflage for support of the invasion.

Re: Russian invasion of Ukraine
Bakhmut close to falling to the Russians. Reports of casualties of 7 to 1. Given a much larger proportion of those will be deaths for the Russians as well then you can understand why the Ukrainians are hanging on. Bleeding them white ala Verdun.
Attacks near Vuhledar have seen the Russians suffer thousands of casualties and the loss of 100+ armoured vehicles without the frontline moving an inch.
Less good news is reports again of Ukraine running low on artillery shells

It's the anniversary of Stalin's death today. I'm surprised the commie bedwetters aren't lining the streets of Moscow waving flags.

So US "intelligence" has narrowed down the list of suspects for blowing up the NORD pipeline to a "pro-Ukraine" "anti-Putin" group

German media reported by Politico and tallying with the New York Times- https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-offi ... ne-russia/
No idea of the veracity of the claims , and TBF, the German outlet talks about a false flag as a possible explanation.

On a broader point, the fall of Bakumut is going to be a very serious setback for Ukraine given the amount of energy they have devoted to it. It’s strategic importance is somewhat understated.

Re: Russian invasion of Ukraine
Not what the experts say. The only strategic importance is both sides trying to blunt the others offensive capability. It is merely a political symbol but it is now drawing in the better fighters on both sides.Ironing Board wrote: ↑Wed Mar 08, 2023 11:19 pm Biden as much as said it was on the cards.

It also seems to be back at stalemate since Ukraine retreated to lines the other side of the river. The Russians seem to lack the forces and morale to breakthrough and even if they do, there are serious questions as to what they have left to exploit any breakthrough. They are currently recommissioning 30 year old tanks which will be brutal when the Western Tanks turn up.
