Watching Lavrov's bull**** at the UN, what an odious individual he is.

James Cleverly rightly ripped into Russia afterwards and Labrov left the chamber.

Coward.

Any protestor sent to fight will probably surrender as soon as they get there if they have any sense.

Apparently 10,000 turned up without being summoned today.

That's good, just another 290,000 to conscript who don't want to go.

I'm convinced we will wake up one morning to find a new leader over there.

Probably closer 90,000. The other 200,000 won't be conscripts, it will be just pay packets distributed amongst the low - mid level commanders/generals.

We used to have press gangs here 200 years ago. What an awful country Russia is.

People fleeing across borders to escape the mad man.

A grim thread about Russia's homegrown Nazis. Read it all if you're not too squeamish about puppies being killed and eaten.

I wonder if the average Russian knows what's going on. Surely even the most brainwashed can do basic maths and see that their government is claiming there has only been 6k casualties but yet they are conscripting a minimum of 300k

How have Russians conseptulised previous large wars, such as WWI, WWII, Napoleonic wars?

As wars of defence.

If the territories they occupy are converted into Russia proper, they aren't not fighting an offensive war, they are defending the Motherland.

It's perverse, it's 1984ish, it's coming to Russian media outlets soon....

Russia never evolved from the slave culture of the Czarist regimes ancient. It is a very sharply stratified society.

The top rules, the bottom is drained.

The only way to keep the many in their passive and submissive state, is through violence.

Russia is structural violence. The Russian people have been conditioned through every possible form of violence.

We should pray they don't opt for the nuclear deterrent, if they feel existentially threatened.

We should pray that the West don't let it's guard down, as then they will be back with a vengeance.

It's an awful balancing act.

Your average Russian doesn’t care. Look at where most of that conscription is coming from and where the losses are being felt (it is the same regions). It isn’t Moscow and St Petersburg. This is imperial war like the British empire used to fight.

Do your duty and there is a bit of money and a passport in it for you. Sign this contract etc etc.

An army of mercenaries and the desperate.

Now if conscription really does start hitting the million figure which has been rumoured then your average Russian may start to worry as then it needs to be their sons and they do start to die.

Putin knows this. He has to find enough people to slow the Ukrainians down, but not enough that people who (in his and his supporters eyes) matter if they die.

It is like the 19th century.
