FAC3: West Ham Utd 2-0 Leeds Utd (9/1/22)

Post by Shabu »

West Ham welcome Leeds to East London next weekend for the 3rd round of the FA Cup.

We've played Leeds three times in this cup, twice in 1924 when we drew 1 all at home before losing the return, at their ground, 4 days later. In our defence this was before cars or planes so our players had three days to walk 190 miles.

The last game was in 1930 when we rolled out 4-1 winners in the 4th round having dispatched Notts County 4 nil in the 3rd round before beating Millwall 4-1 in the 5th round. Alas we lost 3-0 to Arsenal next game although we beat them a week later in the league (we finished 7th that season).

I'm anticipating a few changes without wholesale differences. So I'm going to take a serious guess this time & see how many I actually get right.

Areola
Fredericks Dawson Diop Johnson (if injured then Longelo)
Kral Noble Rice
Yarma Vlasic Okoflex (if Fornals is still out)

No idea who's still out for Leeds. Or how much they want to prioritise this game. If they lose to Burnley tomorrow they could be right in the middle of a relegation battle although they will have a whole week off between meetings with us.

With our defence leaking goals & Leeds still capable of scoring (2 each in their last two games) I reckon we could be in for another thriller. 4-3 to the Happy Hammers.

That team looks about right, although I’d be surprised to see Oko Flex starting. Maybe Bowen and Fornals will get a half each, or we may see Perkins again.

Ideally a debut for a new signing too…

I’d give Alese a chance to impress. Has been very solid in the U’23:s. At least if Cresswell is back. Diop is all over the sea.

I’d go with:

————-———————Areola———————————

-Ashby——Johnson-Dawson-Alese——Longelo-

—————————-Kral————Noble————————

-Vlasic——————Yarmolenko—————-Fornals-

Subs: Randolph, Fredericks, Baptiste, Diop, Masuaku, Rice, Lanzini, Bowen, Perkins.

I personally care more about the League game against this lot than this Cup game. And besides, if we get through to the next round they’ll only stitch the draw up at some point so we get one of the other top 6 clubs. Probably Man Utd, again.

Rest as many of our key players we can. And give 1-3 of the youngsters a game. I went for Ashby over Fredericks as Ashby is more likely to be here next season. Longelo over Masuaku as Masuaku is the only recognised left back we have, whether we like it or not. I really want Kral and Vlasic to play in this game so they can get more use to playing against Premier League clubs. I’d play Fornals too as he hasn’t played since being tested positive.

If we win, great. If we don’t, I won’t lose sleep over it.

Fredericks on the bench last couple of games and so I would expect him to start along with Noble. And if Fornals has recovered I would expect to see him as well.

-----------Noble - Kral

Yarmo ---- Vlasic ---- Longelo

Leeds are decimated by injury at the moment.

Our bench can be stocked with internationals :newthumb:

I think Leeds will put an extremely weakened team but we still need enough about us to win.

I’d go:

———-————-Areola
Coufal—Dawson—Alese—Longelo
————-—-Noble——Kral
Yarmo———-Vlasic——-Fornals
———————Antonio

I’d have a strong bench in case we need to turn the game, but also be tempted to give Oko-Flex a decent portion of the second half.

Teams should reflect that Leeds priority is to stay up and ours is to win a trophy.

Leeds are a high energy high pressing team therefore I think it’s a bit too much of a risk playing Kral.

Would like to a couple of changes but not too many as I really think we should give the FA cup a good go this year.

Arreola

Fredricks Diop Dawson Masuaku

Rice Noble

Lanzini Vlasic Fornals

Bowen

I was hoping 2022 was a year when we didn’t have to suffer a lacklustre petulant Yarmolenko donning the C & B

Leeds will 100% be focused on premier league survival meaning we can definately give an opportunity to some fringe/under 23 players.

I'd go with:

Areola
Frederick's
Dawson
Alese
Longelo
Noble
Rice
Kral
Vlasic
Fornals
Bowen

That should be enough to see this lot off, although we have Soucek, Antonio and Lanzini available from the sideline if needed.

For me, he's of limited use, but he is far from useless.

I think he might be offski, this window, mind.

'The party caught the 4pm train from Kings Cross on the Tuesday for the replay the next afternoon. Those supporters that could make it were encouraged to catch the 10.10am due in at Leeds at 1.56pm and to make the return journey by the same train as that in
which the West Ham team travel - 5.30pm from Leeds, due at King's Cross 9.25pm' - Daily News, 5/2/1924.

The funny thing about that is that a century ago the trains were better!

:newthumb: I’d POSSIBLY have Noble or Kral in for Soucek or Rice but other than that pretty spot on.

Bought tickets for the Leeds cup match but tested positive for the Rona this morning.

What's WHUs policy when it comes to returning tickets and refunds in this area?

Moyes doesn’t seem to be a manager who believes in wholesale changes, unless it’s a dead rubber. I.e. our last Europa League game. Especially if there’s a bit of a break from our next League game. He prefers to keep players ticking over and keeping up the momentum, then having breaks. And to be fair, if you ask most players whether they prefer playing games, or training I am sure almost all of them would say the former.

I think they’ll be some changes for this game. But not as many as I would like, or as many as some of us believe he will make. Areola, Fornals and Vlasic are the only 3 I am confident enough to predict will come into the starting 11.

I think it applies to PL games only these days. Might be wrong though.
