Times we were really rubbish.
Hi all,
Was disappointed as everyone today to not pick up three points and even if we scored late on it would have been barely deserved.
Or would it have been? .....You make your own luck and we almost got an equaliser against a Leeds side who really shone today.
We are obviously a decent side and we competed and had chances aplenty. We have beaten all of the top 6 usual suspects at various points this season and are still in FA cup and Europe as well as being up in the top 6/7 when all games played equal.
I think a poster mentioned about us being rubbish. At risk of sounding patronising only because I'm getting on a bit but I remember when we were truly crap at lengthy times.
I remember when we couldn't buy a goal with the likes of Mike Small or Mike Newall. I have forgotten dismal nil nils at the Boleyn v Coventry City.
Losing four nil at home to Villa and Qpr as well as the Pellegrini years when every bigger club put five past us at the new stadium.
I had times I was truly indifferent, the David Speedie days or Mike Hughes when we could only celebrate stopping Man Utd winning the title.
Perhaps I'm being unfair, that particular day was great for most of us.
I'm asking you to contribute when we we're truly awful even if interspersed with magic moments.

The 3-4 defeat at home to Leeds when we were relegated was a shocker. The first half was as bad as it gets.

Re: Times we were really rubbish.
We were far from great but created enough to get something from the game.
Whenever we lose a game you for some bizarre reason always get a few saying "that's the worse we have played this season" "We were rubbish" "That's the West Ham of Old" "That was shocking" Ect, ect.
As I said on the match thread, all I ever want and ask from WHU is to be entertaining and to play with desire and effort. We have been all three this season and last season.
4th, +11 goal difference, goals galore in our games this season, Still in The FA Cup, Last 16 of the Europa League.
Disappointed we lost today, but I am still very much buzzing regarding our team this season.

Last time we played Reading away in the championship. Goals galore for Reading and red cards for us.
Ipswich on transfer deadline day in championship
The 5-0 FA cup defeat to Nottingham Forest (sure we played our kids but come on) followed by another 5-0 drubbing by Man City a few days later

Under Grant, we were a circus and the final half dozen games almost comically bad.

Re: Times we were really rubbish.
The end of the period under Zola and the following season under Avram - basically the first 18 mths of G&S in charge.
Woeful on the pitch, a succession of absolute crap, pound shop signings which were nowhere near the calibre of what we’d been used to / blessed with before.
Apart from Carlton, Green and Parker our senior pros were a bizarrely thrown together of random foreign cheap deals.
Tomkins and Collison were great youngsters but the rest of the squad was crap.
I remember having one weekend ruined by getting the coach and tube all the way up from Bristol on a freezing day to see us lose to the mighty Stoke where Ricardo Fuller put us to the sword.
We were proper crap around that time, most on here don’t like Big Sam but in my eyes he did a good job for us and gave us a bit of pride back. The football was obviously long ball but we weren’t a soft touch and certainly weren’t bullied on the pitch.

League Cup Semi Final First Leg 1990.
Took half day off work. Travelled 4 hours by car to Oldham. Crappy plastic pitch. Lost 6-0. No cover on away supporters and it pissistently threw it down with ice cold rain most of the game. Got soaked through with onset of pneumonia and got back home about 2-3am next morning after another 4 hour drive. Also had work the next day. Why? Just..........why?

Millwall away in the 2000s was grim.
I went and it was a proper shitshow from us in such a big game, relatively.

Re: Times we were really rubbish.
I have such a vivid memory during that period of one day happening across a video of us playing what must have only been 2 or 3 years earlier, and it struck me in that moment just how quickly and completely we’d been hollowed out. I could barely fathom that we had recently been able to put out a team with Benayoun, Zamora, Bellamy etc. It seemed so distant even though it was probably a gap of about 2 seasons.Roby wrote: ↑Sun Jan 16, 2022 7:37 pmThe end of the period under Zola and the following season under Avram - basically the first 18 mths of G&S in charge.
