Rooney at Derby

I’m not the blokes biggest fan but the job he’s doing at Derby is pretty outstanding.

His appointment was discussed when Gerrard was appointed at Villa and I remember a few people claiming he was out of his depth which has proven to be wide of the mark.

Despite barely having more than 12 outfield players on their books a couple of weeks before the season started and being hit with two separate points deduction totalling a huge 21 points, they are only 8 points off safety with 20 games to go.

They’ve given themselves a real chance after taking a pretty incredible 13 points from their last 15. It’s also interesting to note only 4 teams have loss less games than them this season, whilst recently they’ve managed to turn draws into wins.

If he keeps them up it would be a truly incredible achievement. I hope he does it (and doesn’t go Everton).

I think he has done a good job Stu and I would have been one of those in the past that predicted it would fail. Thus far I am wrong.

With that being said I do think that talk of him potentially being a consideration for the Everton job is quite frankly ridiculous. What he has done with Derby does not qualify him to manage a top ten premier league club. If he is recruited based on his time as a player then Everton will have followed the well trodden path of thinking good footballers automatically make good managers.

I hated, hated, hated him through 95% of his career, but gained some respect for him for how he handled himself late in his career and how he has handled himself as a manager

Early on he always struck me as one of the most entitled players in the league. By the time he finished his career, he appeared willing to play unfamiliar roles if needed, and was clearly willing to put a shift in defensively. I think his time in the MLS is a good example of this. Compared to other big names who came over, he took a head-down attitude and humility into his time in the US. Didn't really act above anyone, played his best and put in a shift (even though he didn't really need to) - it was a stark contrast to someone like Lampard's spell there.

I think the same goes for the difference in attitude that he and Lampard brought to the manager's role at Derby. Rooney doesn't strike me as one who feels like he's above the role or that he is entitled to be a PL manager because of his playing experience. I get the sense he wants to prove himself, and see if he can accomplish something really special by keeping them up (he's done everything else in his career already) as opposed to being willing to jump ship in the way Lampard did (when really he had no right to be given the Chelsea job when he was).

It really hurts me to say this because I hated him so much when he was at Man U, but I guess I respect him now.

Don’t like the bloke. But yes, he really has done an unbelievable job at Derby. To keep them fighting with all the points deduction they’ve had and not being able to really spend much money on bringing in new players is not to be sniffed at.

I hope for his sake though he doesn’t make the same mistake Fat Frank made by throwing himself at the first big job that’s offered to him. He is better of staying there for another season or two.

He's clearly got a lot of football intelligence which he displayed throughout his playing career. Also mentality isn't a sole factor in sporting success so like it or not he deserves respect for the job he's doing

Phenomonal talent, didn't really perform at big competitions for England.

Loves football, can see him carving a career for himself until someone takes him to the PL and they demand too much too soon.

Look at Chelsea for an example.

He's got 13 senior players who in most situations would be looking for work in League One and a bunch of academy players.

No "siege mentality" alone is keeping that team within a sniff of safety. He might not have any potential as a Premier League manager but he and Rosenior are doing a damn good job there. Way more impressive than Lampard (and Morris) almost bankrupting them to get into the play offs.

Comparing with last season, when he was player - manager, the turnaround is pretty spectacular. Finished 2021 with -22 gd and currently on +1.

Derby won't want him to leave.
