This game followed a very familiar pattern that's been going on for the last 3 months.

We start well, waste opportunities and run out of ideas, the opposition keep it tight at the back and work like b*stards, closing us down, we can't keep hold of the ball, they gain confidence, sense we're there for the taking, they get their tails up, work even harder and then we're in real trouble!

Teams worked us out a while ago, give us time on the ball and we're very dangerous, work hard to close us down and we struggle.

Last night was an absolute choker but not surprising.

I actually thought that Fornals was the stand-out passer on the pitch from the LWB type position, and we deteriorated enormously in his absence.

It doesn't augur well for Alese and Longelo if they still can't get a game with Cresswell, masuaku, Fredericks and Coufal injured.
Good point 1966. Fornals played a more 'wing half' position before he joined and excelled in it. I think he plays his best for us in a deeper position too and I hope Moyes continues to bolster the midfield with him. I often wondered when we were short of centre backs if Soucek might be more suited to that role. His key passing from deep midfield is abysmal and part of the reason the forwards don't get great service at the moment. We will never know.

Southampton look in good shape, squad wise, I'd be very surprised if we finish above them next season.

Can someone explain to me if that really was a penalty to Southampton why the ref also didn’t send off Les? Surely he was last man and it was arguably a goal scoring opportunity? :?

On a positive note I thought Diop once again had a very good game. :newthumb:

The double jeopardy rule or whatever it is called. You can't be severely punished twice.
A pen and a yellow inside the box. A free kick and a red outside the box.

Because it was penalty. If it was outside the box he'd be sent off. But because it's in the box and he made an attempt to get the ball, the penalty is enough punishment.

Rules have changed, no more red cards for being the last man if a penalty gets awarded.

Old bill blocking the roads was ridiculous last night, absolute joke, couldn't get back to the car and over aggressive policing

We weren't even (that) bad, and on another day we'd have drawn that in normal time at the very least. Just making individual mistakes, and it's constantly the same player(s) making them. Dawson just looks exactly the type of player he was when we bought him, at times - not a bad central defender, but just bad positionally, never in the right place to challenge his man before the ball gets to him and instead too often his opponent gets on the ball and gets a run at him leaving him unable to make a stop. He seems to always want to take a step back from the ball rather than towards it, and not only did it cost us two goals it also opened up two good chances last night for Redmond and Ward-Prowse to take a dig from distance. He's just not good enough.

Perraud who scored their first last night - I was saying we should sign him last summer. He was excellent for them, exactly what we need to improve at left back.

As I said after the last game - it's OK when we win, but when we lose our inability to hold onto the ball with simple passes costs us so dearly. Southampton weren't a lot better than us last night, but having players like Soucek complete about 60% of his passes is just awful for someone in that position. It has to change.

And I know we’re not full of flair players because that’s not what a Moyes side is, but even at the start of the season we looked decent when both on and off the ball, and now it seems we can’t even string a 5 yard pass together.
The opposition have adapted their approach. What Southampton did well yesterday was press us. Wolves didn't much that is probably the difference between the two games. Same way teams let us have the ball and sit deeper than last season.

We are woeful under the press.

Because we have a team with mostly athletes, not players who like to pass and move.
The players are also conditioned to run vertically, not to find space with short burst of sprints in other directions.

So we end up chucking the ball forward, as if it was a game of ice-hockey

Have to say, I agree with this. We do struggle when pressed. When the other side are daft enough to give us time and space we play some very nice football.

On the pen, I thought Dawson was tugged back firstly, the ref didn't get shown that part of the build up. Ref was always going to give the pen on what he saw on the screen. That bit was a pen and when he didn't initially blow I thought we dodged one.

Agree. Take those chances and we’re 3-0 up, we’re all buzzing and think we can take on the world.

Well that turned into a **** day,3 hours to get there ,we parked in the Ocean car park where we have used before and had a couple of beers in one of the bars at the marina, walked to the ground which takes about 15 minutes and that’s where any positives ended.
My view of the match was we should have been out of sight by the time they scored and done well to get back level and then as everyone knows their subs against our subs won the game for them.
Then the fun started ,being blocked by police in getting back to car we had a game of dodge the copper to get through and walk back to the car park, where we had to join a long queue to pay for the parking and then join an even longer queue to get home.
****ing roadworks everywhere and it took 4 1/2 hours to get home .
I have only managed 3 away games this year and we have not won any of them, sorry folks but I am going Seville next week.

What I couldn't work out was why Dawson was playing deeper than Zouma, where his lack of pace is just magnified?
