And we were robbed of 15 overs. That extra hour at the rate Brook/Stokes were going would have been another 140+ runs!kenthammer wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 1:36 pm Aussies 598-4 at end of day 2 v Windies

It's a West Ham thing. 40+ years of let downs and it feeds into pessimism across other sports!BabyClaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 11:47 am I think only in England could you be 502-4 at the end of Day 1 and worrying about playing like this against another team.
We're the world champions of white ball and are playing some truly outstanding first class cricket. I love it!

I'm not sure it will suffer, PJ, as other sides will be forced to follow suit. Think it's quite likely to put bums on seats.pablo jaye wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 11:11 am It will be interesting to see it against the Aussie seamers.
In some way it would be good to see how other sides combat Bazball … if not, and we beat sides with relative ease, test cricket as a whole will suffer. However, I am not sure it will be sustainable.

Re: England cricket 2022
On one level, I get your point. To be fair it wasn't slogging, and why not punish a weak bowling attack on a road?BabyClaret wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 11:47 am But what happens against the Ozzies isn't relevant is it? They've gone out today to put Pakistan in the ground because its flat as a pancake. I would say 95% of the boundaries (at least) have come from good shots rather than T20-esque slogging.
The point of "Bazball" is to be aggressive and play shots when you can - at the moment there's simply more opportunities. Against Australia it'll be less opportunities but I expect the aim will be to put pressure on the bowlers rather than hitting 24 off an over!
I also don't see Test cricket suffering because we play positive, exciting to watch cricket and are successful.
I think only in England could you be 502-4 at the end of Day 1 and worrying about playing like this against another team.
But overall I look at test cricket and want to win the Ashes. Yes it would be nice to beat Pakistan at their gaff, can't sniff at that, but the more this approach succeeds short term, the more the captain and coach keep banging the drum, the more ingrained as a mantra it will become. We are now picking white ball players in the test side, like they have discovered something no one else can do. People seem to forget how Jason Roy fared in red ball cricket.
Based on our numerous collapses in the past, where players found it impossible to show any patience batting, what will happen in the Ashes when conditions favour the bowlers. Cummings and Co will rip us to pieces I fear as we take them on.
It's like picking 4 attacking midfielders and 2 strikers and assuming you will win every game 7 -5. Yes it will be exciting, but good teams will have an answer.

He annoying always seems to come into good form just before an Ashes series played over here.

Yeah, they declared when he knocked 200.
Windies are presently 240-4 so it’s a batters dream.
I do agree on Smith, though. Both him and Root are true modern day batting greats of the game.

Re: England cricket 2022
Isn't the Pakistani conditions influencing that batting line up though? There's no way Livingstone is batting at 8 in the Ashes, and nor is Jacks playing. Bairstow will be back for one and at least one more pace option will be bought back in.Bend it like Repka wrote: ↑Thu Dec 01, 2022 7:49 pm On one level, I get your point. I don't agree with looking at the Ashes, but the team at the moment seems to be Duckett, Crawley, Pope, Root, Brook/Bairstow, Stokes, Foakes/Bairstow, Leach, Anderson, Broad, Robinson/Wood/Archer? That side seems a lot more consistent old-style Test. I know JB is there twice but I see him replacing one of those options.
On today's cricket, there'll be some (not on here neccessarily) that'll bemoan England for not hunkering down/being there end of Day 2 for 700-800 runs. That sort of dry cricket is what will kill off Test cricket. England have hit 657 for more than a run a ball and have left time in the match for a result.
I also thought this was a very good column (as always) from Nasser, sorry its the Daily Fail: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/crick ... -rave.html

I can't stand pitches like this.
Give me 80 all out rather than 600 declared.

Re: England cricket 2022
How to kill Test Cricket.... best games are the 250-300s with the both sides having a chance. This is just a snooze fest.
Re: England cricket 2022
Might as well call it a draw. I’m cutting Pakistan a bit of slack though as teams only started touring there again just before covid hit, a good 10 year hiatus before that
Hopefully they’ll prepare a better pitch for the next one.

Re: England cricket 2022
England pushing a long, no real signs of the pitch falling apart. Lead 237 now with Root and Brook going at a run a ball.
