Transgender Sport

Post by Bend it like Repka »

This debate is not going to go away. After the success of Lia Thomas at the NCAA Championships, and the very real possibility she could represent the USA at the Olympics the next test of science could be coming to British women's cycling the Saturday.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/60911823

"Bridges previously set a national junior men's record over 25 miles and was selected to join British Cycling's senior academy in 2019."

Be interesting if she suddenly beats Laura Kenny.

I feel so sorry for female athletes having to deal with this. Imagine training your whole life and missing out on a medal against someone who clearly does not match the same physical criteria as you.

Even Seb Coe has acknowledged the dangers here.

I'm all for equality, but this is getting ridiculous.

It's cheating.

If you want to identify as a woman, fair play. But you can't enter women's sports. However which way you dress it up, you were born a male and therefore you have genetics that would give you a great advantage in women's sport, so you shouldn't be allowed to compete.

The only way I can see it going is that there will be a 3rd gender at the Olympics, trans. And I guarantee there will not be one female to male winner in it.

Here's the question to ask - if it's fair, then why are there no female born trans men at the top of any male sports?

She's now not allowed to compete this weekend.

This statement shows the mess sport is in with this.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/60934099

"For this reason, British Cycling is today calling for a coalition to share, learn and understand more about how we can achieve fairness in a way that maintains the dignity and respect of all athletes."

Good luck with that.

especially in the swimming events !!!!

:crylol:

Florida governor Ron DeSantis has signed a proclamation acknowledging runner-up Emma Weyant as the winner of a women's college swimming event after she lost to a transgender athlete.

Lia Thomas beat Weyant by 1.75 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle last Thursday in Atlanta to become the first transgender National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) champion in Division I history.

But DeSantis believes the NCAA was "trying to undermine the integrity of the competition" and said University of Virginia freshman and Olympic silver medallist Weyant is the deserved winner of the event.

"She had the fastest time of any woman in college athletics," DeSantis said of Weyant during a news conference.

"Now the NCAA is basically taking efforts to destroy women's athletics, they're trying to undermine the integrity of the competition and they're crowning somebody else the women's champion and we think that's wrong."

that's a HUGE time gap in swimming.......

Transgender cyclist not allowed to race
Transgender cyclist Emily Bridges will not compete at Saturday's National Omnium Championships in her first women's event after a ruling by cycling's world governing body.

The 21-year-old looked set to face some of the sport's biggest names, including five-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny.

However, British Cycling said in a statement on Wednesday: "We have now been informed by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) that under their current guidelines Emily is not eligible to participate in this event."

Bridges began hormone therapy last year as part of her gender dysphoria treatment and has now become eligible to compete in women's events because of lowered levels of testosterone.

British Cycling's transgender regulations require riders to have had testosterone levels below five nanomoles per litre for a 12-month period prior to competition.

It’s not really going to work in weightlifting either is it. For a start you have to posses a pretty good snatch.

To quote a meme doing the rounds, "My generation had Wonder Woman. This generation wonders if it's a woman".

I can see this happening and would be part of the main Olympics rather than a separate event like the Paralympics. Would there have to be two sub-categories - women>men and men>women trans groups?

How would mixed sex events work?

I think this issue will be solved, in time.

Another one brewing is in Paralympics, where the degree and type of handicap is being altered.

4 categories:

Men
Women
F to M trans
M to F trans

Mixed categories:

1 male + 1 female.
1 F to M trans + 1 M to F trans.

Admittedly the logistics will be a nightmare to sort, so have 2 competitions:

The Olympics as they are, for male and female athletes on a four year cycle.

The Trans Olympics on a four year cycle, to take place between the Olympic four year cycle.

Olympics in 2024, Trans Olympics 2026, Olympics 2028 and so on.
