Earthquakes
A bunch of earthquakes of differing sizes have happened in the last 24 hours.
A big one in Peru, a couple east of L.A. and some others around the ring of fire including Vanuatu.
The Big One is coming. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But sometime in the next few thousand years. Probably.

Re: Earthquakes
It's coming. The Pacific NorthWest is the biggest ticking time bomb in the US. They have those highly active subduction plates up there. They have a 1 in 10 chance over the half century of having a 9.0 or bigger. Subduction quakes are far more violent than the transform slip quakes we have on the San Andreas. Seattle will crumble if they get another 9.0+. Either way, when the San Andreas and Hayward (for me) faults kick off, I hope I'm in the right part of town. Some parts of San Francisco are built on sand landfill and literally liquify if the shake is strong enough. Our house is built on bedrock, but our office is on one of these sandfills.

Re: Earthquakes
^^^^^
That'll be Cascadia. The geological record shows that previous quaked have been massive, causing mega-tsunamis - the Pacific North West will be ****ed when that goes - and it ain't the quake that will do the damage. It will be the Tsunami.

Re: Earthquakes
It's some 20 years overdue.Last one over 9.0 was in 1700 and the Cascadia fault averages a catastrophic quake every 243 years. Even with that, I really do want to move back to the Pacific NW. It's my grass is greener place.

Re: Earthquakes
No. No it wasn't. The folly of greedy men with limited land availability on the tip of the peninsula.
Seattle still has it worse. It was unknowingly built on a sediment-filled basin which sits on top of a smaller fault. When there's an earthquake in the area the sedimentary basin amplifies the shaking like a bowl of Jello. Seattle and Mexico City are similar in that way.

I know, mate. And it's the bread basket of America (have I got that phrase right?). Anyway, the most fertile land in the USA. There will be repercussions for the whole country in a few years.

About half hour later came the breaking news on bbc.It was one. I was glad I was sitting quietly with no traffic going by or might have missed it. I'm glad I had the experience but I wouldn't want more than that thank you. Must be so scary for people when the big ones hit.

I went & put covers on all the chip trays then generally just rode it out. It was exciting & scary all at once. The casino was made to look like a big old barn & we had these large wooden chandeliers (about 5 or 6 feet across) & they were still swinging an hour later.
When I got home that night my cats were spooked out. They acted weird for a few days.

Re: Earthquakes
Easter Sunday 2010. I was at work when a fairly big one hit just across the border. Lasted about 90 seconds. At first I was terrified but that only lasted a few seconds before my work mind kicked in. I was watching four Blackjack tables. The players grabbed their chips & ran outside. Three of my dealers ran out of the pit too with just one bloke left who seemed to be enjoying it.bonzosbeard wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 10:26 pm 2019 I was sat on sofa half ten at night when my sofa shook like someone kicked it hard and heard a distance boom.i remember thinking that was weird and stupidly wondered if it was an earthquake.

On a different note I was fascinated bu you watching tables. I don't really gamble but I think it was oceans 11 film where they showed they watched people reading cards etc and sometimes more than just kicked them out. I'm guessing you can tell card readers from their concentration but I know you cannot say that stuff anyway, but sounds fun.

Re: Earthquakes
Wow 90 seconds. This one in Somerset lasted as long as an quarter of a second. If I was you I think I would have been laying on the floor which wouldn't be any use if place collapsed.Shabu wrote: ↑Tue May 31, 2022 11:39 pm Easter Sunday 2010. Re: Earthquakes
Felt a couple this morning. There was a 4.1 in the east bay early morning and we just had a smaller one a minute ago. I don’t usually notice them as they happen continuously. I guess I was particularly still this morning. The first one caused a wobble though.

Re: Earthquakes
On a related note I was staying in Naples (Italy, not Florida) last weekend, in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. It hasn't erupted since 1944, but the longer this goes on the more likelihood is that it will be a big one, potentially on a scale similar to the one that destroyed Pompeii
Apparently there are about 3 million people living within the danger zone, which therefore classes it as just about the most dangerous volcano in the world. I know that the soil is fertile as a result, and land was probably cheap, but I wonder how you can live so close to a ticking time bomb like this, invest in property & so much infrastructure, etc. The hotel I stayed in was fantastic, but I doubt the sumptuous soft furnishings would repel molten lava

Re: Earthquakes
Afghanistan is f*cked.
Major earthquake last night killed over 1,000. And that figure will probably double.
They had a drought, half the country are starving, there's no real infrastructure in place.
Just shows how much of a winning lottery ticket you get by being born in the right place.

Re: Earthquakes
I can raise your 6.5 for a 6.6 . I was in this one, was a bit lively. It was our second earthquake, we were in one in Halkidiki a few years earlier.likemydreams wrote: ↑Sun Jun 05, 2022 5:13 am i was in this badboy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1987_Edgecumbe_earthquake

Back in the 60's & 70's it was a completely different place. then the Soviets and religious savages came along leaving it a basket case.
National self loathing on.
It's all our fault, we failed to the help people.
National self loathing off.
Despite them generally not being that bothered about helping themselves.......

Be interesting to hear someone explaining the benefits of the religious revolutions.

Re: Earthquakes
Isn't that similar to Iran? Well, minus the Soviets...
