Didn't know Val Kilmer had throat cancer and he has been dubbed for that movie with an artificial voice.
Saw some interviews and reports, really heartbreaking.

Maybe I'll take a second look at the first movie, see if it inspires me to take a gander at this one.
I was never a massive fan of the original but remembered as being a decent movie.
In preparation for watching the belated sequel, we did revisit the first one and it was as I remembered it, cheesy but watchable.
Top Gun:Maverick is far superior. It is a great movie and one of those rarities where the sequel is better than the original.
I’m seeing it again on Friday 😁

I want to take my son to it but he hasn't seen the original, do you think he needs to do that first?

Not necessarily.
It's rather a remake than a spin off.

Not really, my daughter hadn't - most of the history is explained one way or another, and I whispered in my daughter's ear the relevance of a few key moments or characters to fill in the gaps but it wasn't really necessary.

What they would miss are any knowing nods to particular moments in the original that this one pays tribute to rather than anything being particularly key to the story

Saw it this morning with my son, they totally nailed it. Joyous from beginning to end. For someone who was obsessed with the original as a teenager this really hit the spot, especially in IMAX.

It can only be an improvement on the first film. It was terrible.

This thread suggests the new film could be worth a go.

Cheesy and overly sentimental is how I'd describe it. I can imagine a US theatre at the end with everyone shouting USA! USA!

However the cinematography was very impressive, especially all of the scenes with the jet fighters. I've had worse hours in the cinema, but certainly had much better too.

Top Gun maker Paramount sued over copyright breach

The family of the Israeli writer whose article inspired the 1986 Tom Cruise movie Top Gun is suing film studio Paramount Pictures for copyright infringement over its sequel.

If anything it was a rip off of Star Wars with the mission they had

Saw it tonight. Wasn't terrible. Exciting flying scenes.

No one chanted USA USA at the end though.

Haha, I thought the same thing.

I enjoyed it for what it is. Benefited massively from the reliance on physical stunts rather than overdoing the CGI as it just felt more real. Otherwise a homage to simpler times.

By the way the bar that Jennifer Connolly owns in the film is an actual bar on the naval base on Coronado Island. It's very close (10 minute walk not right beside) to where they filmed the beach football scene.

And it really does have those signs in about buying a round if you have your phone on the bar etc.

Really enjoyed Maverick. Great fun but yeah...the Star Wars comparison is a good one.
