I was exactly the same
I just thought of the Love me do & I want to hold your hand stuff which didn’t appeal to me

Then I watched a few documentaries and thought I’ll dive into their music catalogue . To see what all the fuss was about . I watched countless interviews from musicians and those in the know why and how The Beatles were so influential

To say I was surprised is an understatement. I then fell in love with The Beatles especially music from 1965 onwards

Now I love it

I'd never given Hawkwind a chance previously, but last night I watched their 1984 gig at Stonehenge and it was pretty good. Completely bonkers, but suited to the location. Some of the Moog synthesisers were superb.

I agree with the derogatory comments above about jazz.

Inspired by the less than complementary comments about jazz in here, I thought I’d give it more of a proper go.

It’s a bit like most musical genres, in that there is some good stuff and some tat … Herbie Hancock seems to be a relatively straight forward way in to it, whilst I’ve enjoyed the few tracks I’ve heard by Lee Morgan and Dr Lonnie Smith. John Coltrane is going to take a bit more effort … so far, I’m not getting on with the sound of his trumpet and can’t stop thinking about Jazz Club on The Fast Show!!

Well I certainly liked Portishead's debut, so I'm looking forward to the next two offerings.

Happy Mondays, should I just start at the beginning?

Yes, because the essence of the band's sound, which was quite different from other 'indie' stuff at that time, is to be found on the earliest 12's and the first album.

Also, and not everyone's too bothered about this aspect, the lyrics from Ryder are better in the early days, before he knew he was having to try to keep writing hits.

I think they are at their best, like most bands, I suppose, on their first two albums. However, they then enter into a phase where their music is taken off in other directions by remixers. Some of the remixes at the time were brilliant, but their best music was across the time before and up to the release of the two albums.

I'd recommend early Jacques Dutronc for those who don't know/like French music. I thought Moon Safari by Air was good and Cross by Justice was superb.

Then you've got Serge Gainsbourg who, although a bit weird, could write a song.

Hopefully you should be able to open up a whole world of retrowave/synthwave loveliness from there, by artists from all over the globe. :newthumb:

I'm throwing My Bloody Valentine into the mix here. I have a vague feeling when their last one came out I tried to give it a go, but don't think I made it all the way through. As my musical tastes have changed somewhat for the better, maybe? over the last decade, I think i'll give them another go and at the beginning...

Six months late.
Jazz is a one man band riding a piano down several flights of stairs. On a loop.
