Music You've Never Given A Proper Go...

Post by bunk »

Bands, groups... artists, whoever. Those who for whatever reason you've never given a proper, fair spin.

I don't think i've ever knowlingly listened to Portishead, so that's changing today.

I looked up the Rolling Stone's Greatest Albums chart, and from the top 20, I can say I've missed out on:

Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
Bob Dylan - Blood on the tracks
Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You
The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

half of those, I'm most likely not going to touch

Bruce Springsteen is the one I'd rather give a go

I think it's better if just summarise by saying almost everything.

Dummy is enduringly brilliant, but Third is, in my humble opinion, one of the best albums ever made.

Yeah, me too. Not wanting to discount the topic at all but I haven't dipped my toes in most pools tbh.

Metal, for instance. There are songs I like but I don't own many albums and there are infinite tributaries of metal. Undoubtedly I'd have found bands I like had I made the effort. Beyond that now.

Ditto. And I've no intention of doing so either. :bin:

Mind you, it's probably marginally more tuneful than much of the white noise Korea posts... :alien:

I spent the first part of lockdown listening to bands and albums that I’d never previously given a proper go. Plenty of great music found it’s way onto my radar - Neu, William Basinski, Os Mutantes, William Onabayor and also albums by the likes of Rolling Stones, Roxy Music, Kate Bish that I’d never listened to previously.

One artist who I have constantly tried to ‘give a proper go’ is Bob Dylan. I must have tried at least half a dozen times and just don’t get him at all - Blood On The Tracks, Highway 61 Revisited … meh.

I venerate Dylan.

Even his more obscure stuff

and his album tracks

are wonderful.

pablo, give a try to his bootleg series #1 - a few tracks from that and you'll know whether to bother further.

Following Rio's post above I had a go at The Wildhearts too.

Not for me though sorry.

While I'm at it, I've not given Bruce Springsteen a 'proper go' as as soon as he starts singing I crave industrial deafness.

I've come to realise, mainly through years of reading this forum, that my musical tastes are much more limited than I thought.

Generally ,I don't get along with:-
Reggae, Metal(particularly the more modern screaming vocals type), Punk or Rap although there are some exceptions.

Any emergent genre post 1982.
Classics I've swerved include Creedence, The Band , Nick Drake. The latter sounds VERY interesting though, the couple of tracks I've heard and will give ND a go.

You gave them, not Gingers solo stuff a go. Listen to The Pessimist’s Companion.
