To take the topic even further on/off tangent, have some French BlackGaze (an unfortunate genre name granted, but it’s Black Metal and Shoegaze combined…)

I must admit to thinking that Country and Western were one and the same genre. What is the difference?

Also I’m another in the ‘never properly given metal a go’ camp. As a 2-Tone and Indie kid, I never really got into it and was put off by the twiddly guitars, spandex and metal hair … although Spinal Tap and Bad News are hilarious!!

Technically Western was a sub-genre of Country. Bigger bands, swing music, lots of electric guitars and lap pedal guitars and a penchant for improvising solos among the musicians. Usually dance songs. Think Bob Wills & Buck Owens. Both bands filled with great musicians, btw. It's music that originated from Texas and was popular from there westward, ergo being called Western.

A lot of people think Country is actually Bluegrass, folk music that percolated stateside from the Appalachians through Tennessee, Kentucky etc. The music was originally acoustic. Banjo, acoustic guitar, fiddle etc. Appalachian roots with a twinge of white Gospel and white working man's blues. Think Grand Ole Opry, Foggy Mountain Boys, Lilly Brothers. Musicians like Bill Monroe brought electric instrumentation, drums and horns into bluegrass and that music evolved into the greater, all encompassing "Country". These days "country" is just a name for mostly crappy, 1990's sounding pop music. Regardless, all of it falls under the banner of 'Country'.

Western is more "legit" cowboy folk music. Steel guitars, banjos, and songs about getting revenge on someone that crossed you. Country is the whitest music on earth, for people who tuck their jeans into their cowboy boots.

I actually think the spaghetti western tracks count. They certainly should because they’re genius. I think even Ween’s track counts:

Classic western would be someone like Gene Autry:

Like I said before, my favorite western tunes were the ones from the 40s thru the 60s that either swung or rocked. Like:

To date Ween must still be the only band who have ever written a song about spinal meningitis.

I earnt my stripes during the Great Punk Rock Revolution. Blokes in flares were the enemy, and i'm stupid and stubborn.

Subsequently there's a big hole in my knowledge where those bands should reside. But I *think* I know what e.g. Wishbone Ash sound like so I chose to swot up on Cambodian Space Funk and other weirdly rewarding bollix instead.
