Re: Cost of living crisis
It's seen as getting one over the man. Plus, due to some rather stupid rules, how else can you watch live games at home at 3:00pm on a Saturday in the UK?
Films there's less of an argument for, but sport is fair game IMO.....

Re: Cost of living crisis
Personally I pay for Sky but I download stuff I've already paid for... why the bloody Ads. I hate adverts with a passion and will often watch live sport recorded so I can skip the half time ads. (I watch NFL a hour delayed otherwise I'd go insane.)Hammer1966 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 8:56 am Is it pretty much accepted now that illegal streaming (or 'theft' to give it its proper name) is wholly acceptable?
I personally resent paying a premium for a product and have adverts as well.. I will go to lengths to avoid them.. When netflix introduces ads it is gone (and I will pirate the little content I watch on it.)

Sterling absolutely tanking against the dollar and more worryingly performing worse than most major currencies. This isn’t getting better anytime soon.

Re: Cost of living crisis
Frankly, the ridiculous prices people get charged to watch TV that is infinitely sub standard to what we used to get 30 years ago is legalised theft as far as I am concerned. £130pm for a package that included hundreds of channels showing endless repeats of old programmes, repeating the same films we've all seen a dozen or more times, with the occasional game of football thrown in on top of other sports that used to be free to air on the BBC - which of course we all still have to pay for - like cricket, F1 etc.Hammer1966 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 8:56 am Is it pretty much accepted now that illegal streaming (or 'theft' to give it its proper name) is wholly acceptable?

Don't worry, because of Brexit we can set our own rates etc and make all this magically go away.

Re: Cost of living crisis
The £ and € are both down about 17% over the year, I think.
The yanks are going to keep on raising their interest rate so the pressure will continue. Both the BoE and ECB are a long way behind the Americans in following this path.
I was told yesterday in a conversation about interest rates, gas bills etc that the UK markets are already pricing 4%-5% rates over here - currently 1.75%.
Re: Cost of living crisis
I can totally understand people who illegally stream stuff due to the cost of legit methods. Absolutely ridiculous, probably a couple of grand a year if you buy the odd film or two as well. Who can afford that with everything else going up in price as well?
That being said, I pay for BT and Sky Sports and illegally stream West Ham games.... if I can't get a ticket to an away game (quite often) or can't make it to the home game (much less often). So I'm paying as much as I physically can for football, and only stream West Ham games because that's the only way to see them sometimes. Definitely not "one illegal stream equals one sale lost" in my case, and it's the same for a lot of my mates.

Interesting article in the FT(£):

The UK is a poor society with some very rich people.

Soaraway inequality is the underlying, fundamental issue with our economy and it needs addressing quickly.Britain is a different story. While the top earners rank fifth, the average household ranks 12th and the poorest 5 per cent rank 15th. Far from simply losing touch with their western European peers, last year the lowest-earning bracket of British households had a standard of living that was 20 per cent weaker than their counterparts in Slovenia.

I can see the cost of living crisis is hitting the KUMBerati hard... £90/£160 a month to watch the telly? Astonishing!

Is streaming more 'cost effective' than Bit T these days?dasnutnock3 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 7:54 pm If you want to use a VPN (as I do), most of the decent providers have a client you can download, such as NordVPN. All very civilised these days. If you want to watch movies go to yts.do and you can steam from there.

Re: Cost of living crisis
I pay £33 a month (through gritted teeth) for 200mb fibre broadband, and about £3 a month or so for NordVPN. There’s absolutely no TV, sports, movies or whatever that I can’t have with just those two things and a decent browser. Plus a TV license of course (and I’m giving some thought to binning it).
Yes, it’s less convenient perhaps and requires a crumb of tech savvy but paying £900 a year for telly? Not for me, Clive.
