Need to see all the transfer business before finally concluding who is likely to improve , tread water or deteriorate. At this point;

Man City stronger ? (Haaland)
Liverpool unchanged ? (Nunez > Mane)
Chelsea are weaker (Christensen, Rudiger, Lukaku).
Spurs look a bit stronger (Perisic, Bissouma).
Arsenal unchanged (Viera > Lacazette)
Man U are weaker (Pogba, Cavani, Mata, Lingard, Greenwood)
Brighton - weaker (Bissouma)
Southampton - weaker (Broja)
Palace - weaker (Gallagher)
Villa - stronger (Kamara, Carlos)
Brentford - weaker if Eriksen leaves
Wolves - slightly weaker (a couple of defenders gone - Saiss/Marcal)
Leicester - unchanged
Newcastle - stronger (Pope)
Everton - marginally weaker ? (Kenny gone)
Leeds - ??? - three unknown quantities signed

Who knows with the promotees?

Too early to predict imo.

However the top 2 will be Man City and Liverpool again.

A bit early to predict given the transfer windows still got a way to go but how I see things given how I expect the window to play out.

1. Man City - echo what others have said. Think they’ll walk it
2. Liverpool - probably a little way of top but comfortably above 3rd
3. Spurs - annoyingly Conte has done well there and is making sensible signings
4. Arsenal - they’re a young team who will only improve further
5. Man United - the new manager will get them going again but ultimately I think they’ll just miss out on top 4
6. Chelsea - lost Rudgier who was key for them IMO. Fancy them to have an early season implosion and Tuchel to be replaced.
7. West Ham - sadly I can’t see us in the top 4 really at all next year unless we make a few more signings that all land well. Fingers crossed!
8. Leicester - will push us close for 7th
9. Newcastle - I think Howes a decent manager who got the playing in the second half of last season. If they make a few more good signings could easily be a couple of places higher
10. Villa - I think Gerrard will have a slow start to the season and be gone by November. Expect whoever comes in to galvanise them
11. Forrest - bizarre feeling they’ll be well equipped for the EPL and be the shock team of the season
12. Brighton - solid season for them but without Bissouma can’t see a top 10 finish
13. Everton - A very average season for them but won’t flirt with relegation like last year
14. Wolves - I can’t see them keeping up the defensive record and they can’t seem to buy a goal. Turning into the new Burnley.
15. Leeds - will flirt with delegation again but ultimately will have enough to stay up. Might even creep a few places higher if everyone can stay fit.
16. Crystal Palace - will struggle without Gallagher and unless another rabbit can be pulled out the hat I see them flirting with relegation
17. Fulham - the perennial yo-yo team will finally stay up IMO.
18. Southampton - they really are quite poor. Will lose Broja too who was pretty crucial to them last season.
19. Bournemouth - sorry Scott but I don’t see the required quality in this side to make a real fist of PL. See them being a good few points from safety too.
20. Brentford - on the basis that Eriksen will go elsewhere I see them collapsing.

1. Man City
2. Liverpool
3. Chelsea
4. Arsenal/ Tottenham
5. as above
6. Man Utd / West Ham/ Leicester
7.
8.
9. Brighton
10. Newcastle
11. Wolves
12. Everton
13. Crystal Palace
14. Aston Villa
15. Nottingham Forest (Forest has 1 'r' not 2)
16. Southampton
17. Bournemouth
18. Leeds
19. Brentford
20. Fulham

I don't know what it is, but I have a feeling that the playoff winners generally do better than those who came 1st and 2nd in the Championship. I think it will be tight up the top, I don't think Chelsea will be as bad as people are saying, and I think Arsenal and Tottenham could be affected by the extra games, so may actually not finish in the top 4 since they're in tournaments they'll actually want to try in.

Manchester Utd is a wild card, they've been hyping up the new manager, but I think the problem with them runs a lot deeper than people think, there's a sense of entitlement amongst the fans and I want them to get relegated because it would be funny and probably good for the game, but that won't be allowed to happen.

I think if recruitment goes well and we actually rotate the team more often this time, we'll have a good go at it, I think the lack of being able to rotate, and sometimes absolute refusal to, cost us a few games last season. They may be athletes, but no-one can perform at their absolute best every single day of the week.

ironilunga wrote: Fri Jun 24, 2022 7:31 am Good post Stu. I think I agree with the way you have categorised the teams and I agree with all the teams you have put in those catergories, with the exception perhaps of us.

I think we straddle ‘best of the rest’ and ‘trying to gate crash’. This is the season I think that Moyes will want to have a proper go at challenging the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd and Spurs. The top two are out of sight but in Moyes mind the rest will be fair game and I think I agree.

I think we have a lot to excited about next season.
Cheers.

I think we have a chance of joining the best of the rest but a lot will depend on our window as we showed last year that if you want to do well in the league and Europe you need a deep squad.

As mentioned our form over the final 27 games of last season was quite poor, which lead to us earning 22 less points than Tottenham. If we want to challenge the top 6 we need a significant up turn in our league form.

Our form last season after the game in which we beat Chelsea at the LS is the big concern for me. Will the real West Ham please stand up. Is it the side that did so well in 20/21 and the first half of 21/22. Or is it the side that turned up in those last 27 games. ? A big season for us imo.

See a fair few people having Leeds above the relegation zone. With Philips going to City and Raphinna (sp?) very likely gone too then they will have to spend that money very well indeed to stay up. I cant see it.

I'm not Phillip's biggest fan, but replacing him with Roca, is a serious downgrade.

I can't see them surviving next season.

Regarding top four and bottom four I agree with the vast majority on kumb.
However, I disagree with some regarding the middle group. I suspect Leicester will struggle. They are losing some key players, and Vardy is nearly fifty surely?
I live out that way now and the natives are anxious. Once the slide sets in they are not likely to reverse it. Rodgers gone by Christmas is a good bet.
I like the club, but their golden era is over.
Maddison will be a January exit to top four club to plug a key hole left by an unexpected injury.
Should get good odds on all that complexity.

I was talking to some Leeds fans over the weekend and they reckoned before Bielsa turned up all Phillips did was stand around and point - Bielsa really got him moving but once he’d gone he’d lost his direction again. Raphina they said you could go games and miss him. They are very confident that spending 100 million from them on a handful of 20 million players will make them stronger as a unit.

Too much still depends on business yet to be done to call this yet.

Probably one to do in the week before the season opener.

My early impression is that both Chelsea and Man U are going to be there for the taking.

Both appear to be a chaotic mess.
