Rugby League World Cup
https://www.rlwc2021.com/
As the domestic season starts to get to the business end , it's worth noting that shortly afterwards the Rugby League World Cup will kick off here in England in mid October. Was a great event when last held here in 2013, this time the Men's, Wome's' and Wheelchair competition will be held at the same time.
Disappointingly not much of it will be down South ( Scotland V Australia in Coventry, one of the Men's semi finals at Arsenal, some of the Wheelchair games at the Copper Box) but places like Leeds , Doncaster are easy enough to get to and don't take too long by train.
I'm assuming the BBC will cover this as they usually do.
Anyone going?

Re: Rugby League World Cup
A shame that there are no fixture further south than Coventry - missing a trick to attract new fans to the game. I suppose it’s a bit like when events etc are southern focussed and northerners complain about the bias.
Will deffo be watching this on tv although tempted to visit my old stomping ground in Headingley.

Looking forward to this, glad it’s on the bbc also.
The opening ceremony hitting technical issues is not a great look though. People just stood there not knowing what to do. Match delayed due to PA issues.

Yes. There had to be a thread for this. Should be bags of posts to follow. Good start to this in the England/Samoa opening game, which promises to be a close match

Not close at all (thus far). Samoa all over the place since Englands first try. Welsby giving a masterclass.Puff Daddy wrote: ↑Sat Oct 15, 2022 3:04 pm. Good start to this in the England/Samoa opening game, which promises to be a close match

England's half backs have been magnificent today. Carving Samoa up with their intelligence and timing.

Re: Rugby League World Cup
About as emphatic an opener as there's ever been. Cmon England. I want us to win this more than the football world cup, if I'm honest, just so we can say we're the only country on Earth to have won the Association Rules, Rugby Union and Rugby League World Cups. And let's face it, that's not something anyone else is ever going to be able to claim, with the possible exception of France (if they can get their RL team to the same level as their RU side, which seems fairly unlikely).

Fantastic start from England. Quite a few bookies had Samoa as favourites??
Australia winning comfortably too. Strong start from the two big teams playing today.
Off to Leeds tomorrow to watch Ireland v Jamaica!

Not a huge fan but do switch it on for major tournaments, sames as the womens WC. I am always hugely impressed with RL boys fitness levels, moving that amount of weight/muscle in a pretty much non stop game is hugely impressive.

Re: Rugby League World Cup
Despite being from Essex and still living here, I much prefer league to union. It's just so much more watchable. Union is horrendous with the sheer amount of penalties given, scrums breaking down, relentless amounts of kicking and so on. I don't mind southern hemisphere Union but trying to watch the Six Nations is just ridiculously tedious now.
To that end I have tickets for the final at Old Trafford. Just learned that the women and mens finals are back to back and so it's two matches for the price of one. Can't wait!

Just watching the England v France match.
It's interesting from the point of view of a long time union fan, that the union game has been changed immeasurably due to concern over head injuries. League on the other hand still allows high tackles and accepts head contact in such situations as accidental.
That Dom Young fella is pretty impressive though

Hush my mouth! Young gives the ball away foolishly leading to a France try.

Re: Rugby League World Cup
Really mixed from England moving from fantastic to crap throughout the game. Comfortable win points wise but the Aussies or NZ will destroy such ‘off periods’

Re: Rugby League World Cup
It’s Australia’s trophy to lose. They are monstrous.
Have been enjoying this tournament but I haven’t managed to get to a game due to work yet. Living 10 mins from Headingley I’d have loved to have gone down there tonight.

England a bit scruffy vs Greece right now. Loads of handling errors and territory given up. Greece have just scored their first try. Wake up FFS.

Re: Rugby League World Cup
Bit better but Australia would absolutely annihilate these sorts of mistakes.
