Aston Villa 0-1 West Ham Utd (28/8/22)

Post by Shabu »

Premier League, Sunday, 28th August. KO: 1400

Sunday at 2pm we travel to the Midlands to face Aston Villa who have so far lost at Bournemouth, beaten Everton then lost to Palace which leaves them sitting in 13th place.

A win sees us overtake them :smiler:

Our overall record is 44 wins, 34 draws & 38 losses BUT we've only lost 2 of the last 14 or 1 of the last 12. We're undefeated in 8 against them with the last four games all being victories for West Ham.

If anyone on here correctly predicts the starting eleven before Sunday I will buy you TEN Tacos on Taco Tuesday next time you're in San Diego. Will he stick with the same old players or start some of the many new & exciting players we are desperate to see?

I'm going with

Fab
Coufal Zouma Ogbog Cresswell
Rice Soucek
Bowen Benrahma Fornals
Antonio

but I'd rather see

Arry
Kehrer Zouma Ogbog Emerson
Bowen Soucek Rice Cornet
Antonio Scamacca

But I am an old tactically blind eejit.

3-2 to the Hammers & a song about us being massive.

p.s. We've won every match thread I've started, scoring 3 goals per game so bet everything you own on us scoring three & winning again.

Friend of mine watch Palace dismantle Villa last weekend.

Said that, a bit like Everton in the cup, last season, once Villa went behind, they just looked beaten, as if they were expecting a rocky ride without knowing how to change things around.

This is the kind of game for which Moyes' experience will serve him well. Gerrard - from the Villa forum I think Bubbs put a link up for - is not proving to be a particularly popular appointment and might start to sink, if we beat them.

That could prompt him into opting for a safety first perspective.

I regret the decision that retains Fab in goal for the league, but trust the coach's judgement.

Johnson will play. Just mould a defence around him.

I don't think we should be dropping Benrahma.

Fornals should have another turn as CAM ahead of Rice and Soucek, who will be needed if Villa's antics from the last time we went up there are any guide.

Hopefully Jarrod enjoyed the rest.

No dropa Gianluca, Davey. He's surely ready for a bit of flat track bullying.

As it's a Sunday kick off what we would the deadline for registering Paqueta be? Think it's normally Thursday midnight for Saturday matches to register new signings

May I just remind thread starters, that there is a set formatting of the thread title of match threads that has been on the forum since day one - and to also remind you that our full club name is West Ham United.

Are villa that good we need 5 defenders?
That says to me sit back, be dominated and smash it to a CF lacking pace.

I’d fancy us much more if Scamacca starts up top. He has an eye for goal, whereas Antonio seems only to have an eye for the stands.

The 3-4-3 formation we used second half tonight would also suit us better.

Johnson earned the right to start this game. Benrahma too. And probably Scamacca too. But Johnson especially. All were excellent tonight. Asterisk next to the quality of opposition, nevertheless, they played great.

I wish Moyes would start Scamacca. I don’t think he will.

It’s more we’re bad defensively we need 5 defenders.

The 5th least amount of clean sheets last season. Conceding at least 2 goals ever other week. 5 goals conceded in the first 3 league games this season. And even the Danish mob managed to score against us last Thursday. We’ve become a cropper.

Something needs to change. And after changing the formation to more of a back 5 tonight in Denmark we straightaway picked up a clean sheet. So let’s keep this going into this Sunday’s game and see what happens.

Playing 5 at the back doesn’t bother me. I doubt Chelsea were complaining using that formation when they won the Champions League. Nor when both they and the Spuds finished top 4 last season. Or Frankfurt when they won the Europa League.

Just don't see how we can sit back with a back 5 and try to counter with Scamacca. Would be Haller again. Would need to use Antonio.

A back 5 tonight when we have possession is more a back 3. Different inviting Villa on to us. Particularly when they have very attacking full backs. Who is picking up Digne and Cash whilst Bailey and Buendia push our wingbacks back? We end up 2 on 1 out wide or midfield gets dragged all over covering.

I don't really care about the perception of back 5 in the Chelsea/Spurs comparison, whatever works. But Spurs countering with Son, Kane and Kulusevski is a different entity.

It's worth mentioning that Villa have conceded more than us. the thing they are doing well is popping the ball around. Letting them all over us would be a mistake imo.

For those bemoaning a “back 5” (which it isnt, it’s a back 3), it should be noted that Villa play with 2 up top.

It's not when you don't have possession which we don't.
Villa have played with 1 up top for 2 out of 3 games.
