West Ham Utd 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur (31/8/22)

Post by Shabu »

West Ham welcome Tottenham Hotspurs on Wednesday, August 31st at 19.45 for the 220th meeting (in all competitions) between the clubs.

We've lost exactly 100 games, winning 66 & drawing 53. Since Moyes returned to the club we've won 2 lost 2 & drawn 1. Our August record against them is 5 wins, 4 losses & 3 draws although we haven't beaten them in August since 1999 when a young chap named Lampard scored the only goal.

So far this season Spurs are riding high without looking too good while winning 2 of their opening 3 games with one draw at Chelsea. A big win today could move them to 2nd place whereas a bad loss could see them 6th.

Hopefully we've signed Paqueta by then & the pressure on Moyes to bring him on later on in front of a packed stadium will be immense, meaning he's unlikely to do it

It wouldn't surprise me if we saw Bowen dropped for this. If he carries on like this his career will be a carbon copy of Danny Dyer's. Come from nowhere for a few smash performances before a slow fizzle out to obscurity :crossed:

I'm picking this team just for the sake of it but I only expect about half the players to be correct.

Fab
Kehrer Zouma Obnonna Cresswell
Rice Soucek
Benrahma Fornals Cornet
Scamacca

1-1 final score.

We’ve picked up 2 consecutive clean sheets in our last 2 competitive games, playing a back 5 in 135 of the 180 minutes combined.

Is there a need to fix something that currently isn’t broke?

The Spuds play a back 5 too.

We changed to a back 4 at half today and that completely changed the game.

There will be a lot of nerves for this...keeping things tight will be crucial to keep the crowd onside

I see us starting with a back 3 and then changing things later in the game.

From an attacking perspective, yes. From a defensive perspective, it was about the same. Although I would argue it was more of the introduction of Benrahma and in some aspects, Antonio who made the real difference between winning and drawing.

For me, one of the main reasons as to why the back 5 didn’t work from an attacking perspective was the fact we didn’t look after the ball particularly well and failed to pick out especially Scamacca and Bowen.

If, IF this Paquetá is signed in time to play, and walks straight into the starting 11, does the problems I mentioned in attack when playing that back 5 formation go away?

The way Son & Kulusevski play wide either side of Kane I can’t imagine we’ll go 3 centre halves. Two to double up on Kane with fullbacks marking their wide players, of which Emerson might be pushing for a start at lb with his pace.

Heart says 2-1 to is, head isn’t so sure

Not for me, I said it on the formation thread.
The full backs are not good enough on the ball.
Paqueta can't sort out the others passing.

I thought more bodies in midfield second half helped. More pressing higher too.

I'm just going to get in here early before it embeds into your programming, it's Paqueta with a q. Please. I can't have another Masuaka

Used to make me laugh when chairman Alan Sugar wrongly referred to his own team as that.

I actually think matching them up is the right move.

It worked against Chelsea last season.

I'd go for a front two with one behind though, two forwards to slip in between the gaps their three defenders leave.

Antonio will be the first name on the team sheet. Has an unbelievable record against them.

They will try to hit us on the break and I don't think we are good enough to take it to them anyway. I will take a draw against spurs and Chelsea all day long.

For as long as I can remember, West Ham have always played a player into form, but I would drop Bowen. Let him know his poor form is not good enough and is not acceptable. We cannot carry passengers
