Re: ✍ Lucas Paquetá - Bem-vindo
I think back to when we signed Lingard and I don’t think I’d be far off suggesting that most thought he wouldn’t work, he was lazy, flash, not what we need etc..
We know what happened with him, his debut was a dream and it went from strength to strength.
I think Paqueta is a better player than Lingard. The difference is, Paqueta doesn’t have anything to prove. He has rocked up as our record signing, he is abrazil’s number 10 and is a player.
The difference is though that we as a squad need to get on his wavelength. If we do, wow, it’s going to be amazing. There were glimpses last night in the first half of what this team can do and I think the reason we dropped off was because Moyes told them to be conservative. Not as in don’t try but don’t go mad as the game is won.
Once Paqueta is understood and he understands our players and the runs that each other plays and the capabilities of each other, it’s going to be something.
The difference with Lingard and Paqueta in my opinion is that we probably got the best 6 months of Lingard’s career. Paqueta’s is only just beginning and if Fornals, Rice, Scamacca, Bowen, Cornet etc can start to gel, £50m will seem like a bargain.

I remember against Spurs, Areola was translating what Nolan was trying to say to him before coming on. It’s very hard to rock up to a new country where your knowledge of the language is limited and expect to fire straight away.
I think it’s telling Moyes has started him straight away though, he and all of us knows we’ve got a player there.

Re: ✍ Lucas Paquetá - Bem-vindo
He is clearly a very good player, whether he is suited to us or EPL remains to be seen, it wouldnt be the first time that a supposed star hasnt been suited. My main point to the quote though is it does make me chuckle the leeway that we give some players where a misplaced pass was due to others not yet being tuned into greatness, whilst others waywardness is just down to them being a dog-sh*t player.

KUMB in the last 24 hours:
"I admire that Moyes geezer. I appreciate his ability to instill discipline and a coherent structure in a disparate group of international professionals...
....but.....
...but ....
If he should come down 'ere and attempt to put Paqueta in goal. IN GOAL. I would say OY! MOYES! NO!! YOU MAY HAVE TURNED THIS CLUB AROUND BUT YOU MAY NOT REQUIRE OUR SILKY SKILLED BRAZILIAN TO PLUG OUR GAP BETWEEN THE STICKS".

wouldn't it be brilliant if Areola had a sense of humour and was telling Paqueta that Nolan was asking him if he could go in goalPete647580 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 17, 2022 1:54 pm

The real question is was Areola translating into French or is there another language they share?

and to follow it up, Areola tells Nolan "yes Boss he says to give him my shirt and he's good to go..."Pete647580 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 17, 2022 2:21 pm Now that's the sort of entertainment I want to see from my club.

Re: ✍ Lucas Paquetá - Bem-vindo
I think it’s frustrating that he has arrived as this team is on a downward trajectory rather than we are on the upward trajectory ( or neutral) we had been on prior to last Jan, it would be so much easier for a player like him ( indeed almost any foreign flai player) to get an early foothold. Pressure to perform on him and the team is now creating a lot more pressure and a lot less patience from the fans. Won’t deny I’m nervous about getting the new boys integrated in a season that is going to be competitively tough in various ways more so if we continue to struggle collectively.hammers92 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 17, 2022 8:36 am I remember against Spurs, Areola was translating what Nolan was trying to say to him before coming on. Re: ✍ Lucas Paquetá - Bem-vindo
I saw him in the last 2 European games, and I have to say he played way below his normal standards. I don't know whether it is about the wavelength or whatever it takes to adjust to new partners and new systems, but I really think it would be the best idea to ask him to play the way he did when he arrived in Lyon. He settled in the team in a 433, with a CDM behind 2 hard working CMs. As he really enjoys the physical aspect of the game, it gave the opportunity to be useful to the team without having to carry all the weight of the creation on his shoulders. He then gradually established himself as the technical leader of the team, and showed all the vision and the class.
I don't see why he could not do that here.

Re: ✍ Lucas Paquetá - Bem-vindo
When does is get to the stage where he thinks ‘I’ve made a mistake signing for this club’?
I reckon Scamacca might be asking himself that too very soon.
Things need to change / the need more game time preferably playing together.

I admit I had never seen Paqueta play until he signed for us but so far he has done nothing to suggest he is worth £50m

Re: ✍ Lucas Paquetá - Bem-vindo
Like our other players new to the Premier League, they need as many minutes as possible so they can adapt as quickly as possible. That's all it is with this guy at the moment... he's used to a league that was a little less intense, where he was afforded a little more time on the ball and dealt with a little less aggression. The more he plays, the more he'll get used to it and his play will adapt. It will do him no favours dropping him and just giving him a few minutes here and there... that didn't work for Vlasic and it won't work here either. It will also take time for him to build a proper rapport with his team-mates.
Of course it would also help him a lot if other players moved a lot more in front of him. All creative players struggle when there's a lack of options ahead. I think he relies on players always moving intelligently around him... so in that respect, maybe he came to the wrong team!

I think it might help if he had some players in form to pass to but it’s fair to say not seen much of what I expected of him, kinda hope he will be the guy who could win you a game when the team are playing poor so hopefully he is

Re: ✍ Lucas Paquetá - Bem-vindo
Being caught on the ball a number of times has got little to do with the manager or his team mates or the language barrier. He was ponderous a few times today. A couple of his tackles were just plain stupid too. I thought he was lucky not to get booked and should have been off earlier.
He needs to adjust to the speed of the English game. He isn't in France now. He is clearly a massive talent, he sees things others in our squad obviously don't. He's also surprisingly good in the air. He just needs plenty of game time and perhaps a bit of luck.
I hope he doesn't make the World Cup squad and he stays here and works with his team mates, inregrates with them socially and settles into living in this country. Going away for six weeks so soon after arriving is going to be a massive barrier to the integration process.
