What songs did your first teenage band attempt in your bedroom?
All us failed musos have been there. Came a time when you went from a 'play in a day' acoustic to your indulgent parents getting you electric instruments so your friend, the drummer, could come and help piss the neighbours off with your incompetent racket. And nobody could sing. Singers came later.
This was just about me first:

I never had a teenage band but I used to strut around the bedroom, as naked as the day I was born, screaming Human Fly by The Cramps into a hairbrush whilst pretending that my bedroom wall was a sea of weirdos in a sweaty underground venue somewhere, wrecking hard to my performance.
Well, I say "used to"...

Re: What songs did your first teenage band attempt in your bedroom?
My teenage band was probably the most accomplished, certainly the most original, in my town. We didn't do covers, we wrote all our own stuff, and were mostly influenced by the likes of Godflesh, Pitchshifter and other industrial bands of the day, but with somewhat more groove than was typical of the time (Pantera's influence on hard metal cannot be ignored). We headlined all our gigs, and at our last one, there were at least 300 more people in the crowd than the venue was officially allowed (they all came in through the unguarded back door). Our guitarist moved to LA after we finished school, to study at the Musicians Institute, and our bass player/vocalist runs a record label and has worked with all manner of celebrated musicians.
I mean, come on - how many of your bands had TWO bass guitars?

Early teens. I fell in love with Alice Cooper's "Schools out." I was well into hi-fi at that time and had a pretty decent set up inherited from my uncle that had a record ability. I set it up in such a way that I could play School's Out, minus Alice's vocals, subsitute mine and record it.
I performed the song and was giddy with excitement when finished - could I be the next Alice Cooper?
I listened to the playback aghast.
I've never sung again - I avoid Kareoke like the plauge and have never done it and never will! - as I'm a reallly **** vocalist!

I taught myself the bass line of Blue Monday on the bass string of an acoustic guitar and could also play the notes exchanged between humanity and the aliens from Close Encounters in harmonics.
Then, out of the blue, the cost of guitar lessons my mum paid for were put up, and that was that.

Re: What songs did your first teenage band attempt in your bedroom?
Wasn't in a band but did set up my brother's old drum kit which had been gathering dust in the spare bedroom around 1985/86 time. It was not long after getting into Iron Maiden and I tried learning Ides Of March and Flight Of Icarus. A few days later I got home from school and my mother had dismantled it because it was too loud. Was ****ing devastated!
About a year later then I bought my 1st guitar which I still occasionally try to play now and again. 1st riff I learnt was Wasted Years by Maiden. Then I discovered the mighty power chord and soon I was playing more parts of songs by Anthrax and Metallica.

The drummer went on to play for The Krewmen, the bass player went on to be a civil servant, whilst I still continue to scare the neighbours playing tunes with a couple of mates … still enthusiastic rather than talented, we’ve slowed the pace down a bit though …

Re: What songs did your first teenage band attempt in your bedroom?
Estuary. DP of course! Specially Smoke on cos it was accessible to beginners. As was 'Black Night'.
Looking back though, stuff from 'In Rock' (Speed King, Flight of the Rat) required more guitar virtuosity so not attempted, specially needing keyboards. Had a good go at 'Child in Time' though.
Used to jam through the three-chord outro to Yes' Starship Trooper. To the extent that a neighbour parked himself on a deckchair over the back playing a trombone in response to our 'orrible racket.
Other 70's faves were:
Faces - Stay With Me
Hawkwind - Masters of the Universe (not the most difficult as many would agree)
Budgie - Breadfan
Focus - Hocus Pocus (without the yodelling)
Whoever? - Big Belly Blues - Probably via Canned Heat. Our singer brought that one in. 13 year olds swinging our hips with imagined sexual threat "Ah got the big belly blues cos mah woman won't let me near"
Thing is, when a band is playing in a house nearby, all you can hear are the cymbals and the bass. Also, when I lived in China 2000-ish the school used to let some students use the outdoor stage in the school to get their band together. I was thinking 'wow' this is exactly what we did 73/74, using the school assembly hall. Don't matter where you go, it doesn't change.

Re: What songs did your first teenage band attempt in your bedroom?
I got my first electric guitar when I was 13. Couldn't play a note, absolutely no idea at all, but I decided to perform at the end of year Parent's Evening show at the school anyway. I roped in a classmate who also had a guitar, but he was a bit of a wiz and knew three chords. Only three, but they were all good ones. And, crucially, we both had fuzzboxes.
Somehow we blagged it through rehearsal by telling the put-upon teacher tasked with managing the show that we were playing a mixture of punk and free-form jazz. She kind of shrugged, couldn't care less.
Big night came, printed programme and everything. My mate started playing his three chords over and over, and I joined in with random tuneless boinks and farts, pouting and posing in the same way that I'd seen the bloke from the Vibrators do. We managed to get through, I dunno, about thirty seconds before the sound was cut off and we were physically removed from the stage by a couple of the teachers. Cue embarrassed silence from the audience, and a smattering of giggles from other kids.
I've played i a few other bands since, but the MO remains pretty much the same.

Re: What songs did your first teenage band attempt in your bedroom?
I'm pretty sure that the first songs I played along to were by buddy Holly but the singer in our first "band" was a huge Gillan fan, and we all liked purple, so I'm sure that smoke was the first song we played together.
First gig was at school and we opened with natural born bogie, as the teacher organising it was a humble pie fan, I don't think any kids knew it
