January 2023 Transfer Window
Hello darkness, my old friend, it's getting to that time again.
So, contract wise we have the following senior players in their final years (again):
- Fabianski
- Randolph
- Ogbonna
- Dawson
- Cresswell
- Coufal
- Coventry
- Lanzini
Decision time on retention plus what else needs doing?
Personally, I think Kehrer has to go to RB and one of the other RB's possibly needs to go, whilst we should be bringing in a centre back.
I think we still lack a bit of pace and clinical quality up top. Someone probably needs to go to let us rectify this.
Also think Coventry may be better suited to the role that Downes is currently being tasked with.
i don't imagine that there will be any money beyond proceeds of sales.

Can't imagine we will spend anything in January after the summer window.

Re: January Transfer Window & Contract Renewals
Cresswell deserves another year, on current form.
I would like to see us invest heavily on his replacement though.

Re: January Transfer Window & Contract Renewals
I'd keep Oggy around for another year if it was cost effective and he showed over the rest of the season that he was getting back some of his athleticism. It often takes two seasons off of an ACL to really get back close to yourself. He isn't currently Prem standard so it needs watching but his leadership and importance to club culture and team spirit is right up there and I don't want us to lose it.
Cresswell should be extended for another year. He has been one of our best players this season.
Fab should be extended another year but to be our backup keeper.
Everyone else can go. I'd extend Dawson but he wants to go. Lanzini is probably the same thing. Ideally I'd probably let Coufal go with an upgrade coming in, but knowing us I can see us punting an extra year and extending him. The rest aren't good enough.

Re: January Transfer Window (hello darkness, my old friend) & Contract Renewals
Difficult time to buy.
Re: January Transfer Window & Contract Renewals
I see no circumstances where Cresswell and Fabianski don’t get offered a 1 year deal.
There’s an argument for all of the rest being allowed to go imo. Dawson I’ve read that he wants to go back up North and Coufal needs to rediscover his form fast.

Re: January Transfer Window & Contract Renewals
Definitely another centre back needed, maybe a loan to buy? If Lanzini was to leave, maybe someone as competition for Bowen as replacement. Right back is the pig in the passage atm, Coufal looks like he's aged 5 years in 1.

Re: January Transfer Window & Contract Renewals
My issue with this is - can you imagine us having 3 actual LB’s on the books? I can’t and I also don’t think Emerson will be sold after just one year so the likely scenario with a Cresswell renewal is those two as our LB choices for another season which is a bad idea IMO
I wouldn’t renew anybody on that list except Fab if he wants to be back up and i’m assuming Coufal has an option and Dawson doesn’t want to stay. That’s obviously not realistic and i’d guess 3 or 4 will be retained

Re: January Transfer Window & Contract Renewals
If they continue their good form I would definitely give Fab and Cresswell a new 1 year contract with an option.
I would’ve been happy to give Dawson an extension to be a 4th choice centre half. But if he wants to go home, we shouldn’t stand in his way. He is human after all.
The one player I would offer an extension to as soon as we can is Conor Coventry. As even if we deem him not good enough and want to sell him, if he has more years or another year on his contract we of course benefit more financially.
As long as his wages aren’t too high and he’s happy here, I am happy if we extend Randolph’s contract too. A lot of clubs have 3 senior goalkeepers now and Randolph is a very solid 3rd option to have.
Lanzini, I want to wait a little longer before I make a more solid conclusion.
Oggy and Coufal, I’d regretfully let go.

Re: January Transfer Window & Contract Renewals
I don't think Moyes is using Emerson as a LB though, is he?
More LWB/LW so far?
Re: January Transfer Window & Contract Renewals
If Rice left this summer, letting go of Cresswell and Noble in successive seasons isn’t great. I’d like some continuity in that area and would expect to see Cresswell fulfilling the role Ogbonna has this year.

Ex has us linked to Noa Lang and Torino's right back whose name escapes me.
Dawson and Ashby will be allowed to leave apparently too.

Four things that were all linked in the summer.Bubbles Fortuna wrote: ↑Tue Nov 01, 2022 12:04 pm Ex has us linked to Noa Lang and Torino's right back whose name escapes me.

Ola Aina is the Torino right back, we (allegedly) bid £7m or so on deadline day in the summer. Would probably show us how we're thinking about renewing Coufal if we did sign him.
Noa Lang we were linked with as early as last May in the Italian press (AC Milan were also trying to sign him). We were also linked with a January bid almost as soon as the summer window closed, with reports about in early October. Moyes loves a creative left winger he can teach defensive skills to.
Ashby was subject to bids from Newcastle if rumours were true and seemed likely to go, and Dawson wants to 'go home' because he's fed up of Southerners not having chip spice on their chips or whatever.

Ola Aina I am guessing. The same player we made a move for towards the end of the window.Bubbles Fortuna wrote: ↑Tue Nov 01, 2022 12:04 pm Ex has us linked to Noa Lang and Torino's right back whose name escapes me.

It’s an easy one to believe. A wingback to replace Ashby, has played in this league before, will allow us to play a back 5, probably won’t be the highest fee and wage in the world.
Had we shifted Ashby and Dawson before the summer window slammed shut he may well have already been a West Ham player. As we would’ve had more money to submit a higher bid.
With Vlasic already on loan there, it looks a likely deal.

Re: January Transfer Window & Contract Renewals
Saw in the BBC rumours page that we've been linked with the Boro right back. I've no idea about him, but Palace are said to be interested as well.
