I was 17 and in the Sixth Form when The Young Ones first aired and it was The programme that everyone couldn’t wait to get to school the next day to dissect and re-enact the previous night’s episode. Bambi is the best episode and never fails to hit the spot but some of the other episodes haven’t aged so well and 40 years later (I really can’t believe it was that long ago now) some episodes barely raise a chuckle.
However it still holds a special place in my memory bank for those long gone now, morning after the episode from the night before discussions in school.
Rik was always my favourite and Mayall remains a much missed comic taken far too soon.

Another one who went to a school where we were obsessed with the Young Ones. It felt like it was ours. Watched them all a couple of years back. Was disappointed with the first series - I thought I’d laughed like a drain at all of them way back when, only to find it more miss than hit. The second series though is more than one step up - like they’d found their groove.

Anyway, to right a wrong - it’s Rick with a silent P.

Rik Mayall is one of those people who I still can't believe is dead.

I watched it as a teen but I think a lot of it went over my head. I was more of a Jimmy Jones fan of comedy then. Will have to watch it again no I'm in my 50's.

An American bloke at work loves it & kept quoting it to me then he said about how he loved Alexi Sayle so I told him about how "Ello John Got a New Motor" was shouted at me every time someone found out my name was Jon, back in the 80s.

So he watched that video & now HE shouts it at me each day :lol:

Then he got his kid hooked on it & recently showed me a video of his boys 3rd birthday party where there's a roomful of little kids dancing & singing to it....

The legacy lives on.

I don't know why because I'm exactly the right age, and I do like Rik Mayall in some of his other things, but The Young Ones never really did it for me. I was more of a Fawlty Towers/Blackadder kid.

Like others, I loved the Young Ones back in the day. We recorded them on tape and I remember noting down the flash frames as we were convinced there was going to be a competition - I think they were just screwing around. I'd seen Rik, Ade and Alexi Sayle doing standup before the Young Ones so was already tuned in to their comedy.

For me, Motorhead and the Damned were the standout guests. I also always looked forward to Alexi's monologue in each episode.

I've definitely confused a few people by using Young Ones quotes - Neil about Crucifixion "I don't wanna bring you down or anything, but I think that is a really negative way to try and kill yourself, I mean I tried it hundreds of times, there's no way you can hammer in the last nail."

I've watched every episode over the last 3 days on the iPlayer and I would strongly dissuade people from doing so. They have been absolutely butchered with cuts. Completely unnecessarily in most places as well.

Really jarring when entire segments are removed, episodes seemed to lose their flow in places, some barely seemed to work, Time especially was a mess. They'd even removed the Mussolini Eurovision entry. The entire thing.
