Re: England's World Cup chances
Its easy to get carried away after the first round of matches, but from what I've seen so far, England, France, Spain and Brazil, look the best of the bunch. They took their chances and were all clinical in front of goal. Things might change in the next round of matches and some who lost first up, may win the next one and open it up, although I can't see any of the above slipping up. Germany losing to Japan was no surprise to me, they are not in the reckonong and don't look to me they have made any progress at all since last World Cup

Much better than I anticipated. They’ve earned the right to play with real confidence.

Re: England's World Cup chances
Being a West Ham fan I'm actually very worried about tomorrow's game against the US.
We're flying high, they're all deflated after the draw against Wales. It's the perfect storm for something to go wrong.

I work for Americans and will have to miss work on Monday if we lose.

We need to be positive against better teams, if we are we can take them on.
I hope we stick with the back 4 tomorrow adding another CB would be negative.
Our strength and depth is in attack so use it.

Re: England's World Cup chances
After thinking about it for a while since seeing all the games, I'm convinced we'll have to play with a 3 at the back, as the very best Teams should we face them (France very likely after group stage) would only carve our back 4 apart at times. Yes, it will take an edge off some of our forward work but I'm still confident in our boys to still be able to produce chances we can take to bea them. And I do like us playing a 4231, we look very fluid, we'd only leave holes at the back against the best playing that way, like Iran exposed a couple of times. Against all the rest of the opposition, Id continue as we left off. Stick Walker on a mission to disrupt the likes of Mbappe and see where it takes us. But other than that, I'm still quietly confident we could beat any Team if absolutely everything went to plan and we play to our optimum.

From an American, there's no reason why England shouldn't smash the USA tomorrow.

We've never beaten the US in a competitive game apparently.
I'm hoping Rishi calls a national holiday if it happens tomorrow.

Re: England's World Cup chances
It's fascinating. The Mbappe worry. He could destroy us if he has space to run into. I do get the theory, and maybe it is the right thing to do. But it's not how many teams win the world cup. Maybe Italy would say it's sensible and they do have the trophies to show for it. The problem when you do that (3 at the back) against someone like France is that you immediately relinquish the ball to them in front of the defence by virtue of them having the extra man in the midfield (or at least one less attacking player to worry about). We've seen many times at our club recently that when you give too much respect to a badge, you're basically praying they don't score first. Because if they do then you have to try and score anyway, and that's when they will punish you. Let's back ourselves. Better to burn out than fade away!Colours never run wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 10:45 pm After thinking about it for a while since seeing all the games, I'm convinced we'll have to play with a 3 at the back, as the very best Teams should we face them (France very likely after group stage) would only carve our back 4 apart at times. However if we end up playing France it's time for a rethink. The thought of Mbappe running like a steam train at Stones and Maguire fills me with dread, and this is when they may bring In a pacey extra defender and I'm all for it.
No point in going all attacking against the big boys if we look likely to concede at will.
And that's not negative tactics at all (before anyone says it).

We don't need another defender against the USA so it will remain the same.El brooko79 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 10:16 pm

Re: England's World Cup chances
Do we want to win our group?
Or would a win against USA and loss to Wales actually suit us better??
Looking at the way France played, I don't fancy meeting them in the Quarters but I'd fancy us against Belgium in the Semi.
In the other half of the draw, I think Argentina and Netherlands look pretty tame on first showing, but then you meet Spain or Brazil in the Semi.

Yes we do.
Not beating USA and Wales is simply not acceptable to me.

Re: England's World Cup chances
Completely agree.
You have to beat a top team anyway to win the thing so just keep the momentum and try and go injury free where possible.
I'd rest players if needed, but we should still go for the win in all games.
Re: England's World Cup chances
Well, we are likely to get through the group but hard to see us going much further based on that performance. We will wait until we are all but down and out before throwing the kitchen sink at it,

Re: England's World Cup chances
This is the beauty of the World Cup. It will still throw up one or two surprises, but there will also be one or two who will get and better as the tournament progresses

Hmmmm, USA better team, Rice can't remember him at all during the game, Mckennie? Run him ragged imo.

Rice played fine, he spent the whole game covering for Mount and Trippier's misplaced passes. No one in front of him was moving.

Can we sack the Manager and get a new one? If not, no f**king chance.

Re: England's World Cup chances
It would have to be a complete catastrophe against Wales for us not to qualify. I think we’d have to lose by a margin of 4 goals to finish below Wales. And it doesn’t matter what the result is in the other match as it doesn’t put any team above us if they draw.
We were quite poor last night, but the way I see it is that Wales can’t afford to be to conservative against us and need a decent win to qualify. They can’t just rely on going 1-0 up and sitting on the lead by shutting up shop due to their loss to Iran. So they need to throw caution to the wind, which should lead to opportunities for England to create chances.
