Re: British TV coverage of Qatar World Cup
is it he that does the South American stuff on talkSPORT ? on the TransEurope Express Sunday afternoon slot ?
if so, he's excellent.
there's another bloke (I'll have pen and paper ready next time to jot his name down) who also works on that show. absolutely brilliant.
in fact it's pretty much my favourite show on the entire thing.
even if there's another game on the telly I turn the sound down and listen to that instead...

Also I like listening to the Scottish guy they have on occasionally. Stewart Wier.

shame we don't have a like button because this applies to mushy too.Denbighammer wrote: ↑Wed Dec 07, 2022 11:55 am Is his name Andy Brassell? I think he does Trans Europe Express with Danny Kelly. Knows his onions re European football no doubts.
thanks for the info.
also I "think" Vickery does the BBC South American stuff too.
I really enjoy listening to blokes (and gals) who actually do background.
all the blokes on Trans Europe Express (if that's what it's called) laboriously do. they comment on games that have played that day, they break down players, systems and that and you even get comprehensive coverage about Turkish football, not that I'm interested it's that they don't just assume everything begins and ends with the Big 5 leagues.
it's really a cracking listen, even though I have not much idea about a lot they cover.
also Guillem Balagué is excellent with the stuff he covers. he's very knowledgeable. not on talkSPORT but these blokes are stuck in the "background" with crap pundits like Jenas, Smith, Souness, Shearer et al.
I mean honestly, anyone of us could commentate on most of the stuff they watch and come out with.
it's so very evident. you see a through ball and a great finish, and they come out with "great through ball and a excellent finish."
they don't add much real insight except stating the bleedin' obvious.

Re: British TV coverage of Qatar World Cup
a real disappointment for most of you I'm sure..
https://www.express.co.uk/sport/footbal ... -Tyldesley
World Cup fans have been left devastated after ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley returned to England from his duties. The 68-year-old was the broadcaster’s lead commentator for 22 years but was stood down in July 2020 to be replaced by Sam Matterface as he took on the number two role.
which fans did they speak to that are "devastated ?"

I once made the terrible mistake of watching motdx with Jenas sporting 'hanging with the kids' ripped jeans and generally being cringeworthy.

The BBC without question take the award for the sh*ttest bunch. And the worst thing about that is we pay for the displeasure!
The smug Gary Lineker who loves to shove politics down your throat. The wooden Alex Scott, who constantly sounds like she is reading from a script. Not to mention a complete hypocrite with her protests on screen. Jermaine Jenas, just why? A nothing player who played as many times for England as Matthew Upson did. Rio Ferdinand, a complete bellend. Alan Shearer who says the word ‘poor’ as if he has tourettes. Micah Richards who laughs at everything. Klinsmann and Williams, yawn.
Mark Chapman and Jonathan Pearce are good at their job. And so is Gabby Logan. Let alone very good to look at!
Disagree with your verdict on Klinsmann who is perceptive, played in three top leagues as well as managing Germany.Agree about Ricards whose role seems to be that of a guffawing buffoon.

Re: British TV coverage of Qatar World Cup
if only they'd let Katie Abdo loose a bit more.
to be honest, the crew on CBS for CL games is a brilliant watch, not particularly for insightful analysis but they do seem to enjoy themselves.
plus they have Peter Schmeical and Gullem Balague on for game breakdowns which is worth sitting through the other stuff for..

Re: British TV coverage of Qatar World Cup
I've watched the BBC games with the Radio commentary.
Pundits/Presenters who have done brilliant that mostly I'd never seen or heard of before:
- Pien Mulensteen
- Nadia Nadim
Ally McCoist is so excellent. So are Laura Woods and Kelly Cates, as always.
I hate to say it, but even Chris Sutton has been good.
Souness did my nut whining about the Japan winner against Spain. Almost as if something had been given against one of the "Big Six" in the Premier League. Same as Gary Neville - Used to think he was excellent, but he has gone into the land of cliche, probably never to return.

I think I watched about 5 minutes of one show a couple of years ago.Ilford Paolo wrote: ↑Thu Dec 08, 2022 4:50 pm I once made the terrible mistake of watching motdx with Jenas sporting 'hanging with the kids' ripped jeans and generally being cringeworthy.
The thing that got me was the way he was talking like the kids. It was f**king embarrassing.

Re: British TV coverage of Qatar World Cup
All sports use ex pros. It can work with racing, F1, rugby even.
Not so much football. There are some excellent football journos who don’t get a look in. Also very articulate fans who understand the experience of suppprters.
The obsession with ex players to talk about a game they once played is a a bit dense.
