Not sure this would be allowed nowadays…
I know this chick she lives down on Melrose
She ain't satisfied without some pain
Friday night is goin' up inside her...again
Well crack the whip
'Cause that bitch is just insane
I'm serious

Punctured bicycle
On a hillside desolate
Will nature make a man of me yet?

Well I think, that you're really really cool,
And I think, that your body does rule,
That's why I wish, I was you so I could f*** me

One summer evening drunk to hell
I stood there nearly lifeless
An old man in the corner sang
Where the water lilies grow
And on the jukebox johnny sang
About a thing called love

Do you remember?
Chalk hearts melting on a playground wall
Do you remember?
Dawn escapes from moon washed college halls
Do you remember?
The cherry blossom in the market square
Do you remember?
I thought it was confetti in our hair.....

We have a winner.
Their ninth album (and last apparently as they are packing in touring next year) has just been released and is great. It’s called Power Grab.

Re: Best opening lines to a song?
16 years old when I went to the war
To fight for a land fit for heroes
God on my side, and a gun in my hand
Chasing my days down to zero
And I marched and I fought and I bled
And I died & I never did get any older
But I knew at the time, That a year in the line
Was a long enough life for a soldier
To fight for a land fit for heroes
God on my side, and a gun in my hand
Chasing my days down to zero
And I marched and I fought and I bled
And I died & I never did get any older
But I knew at the time, That a year in the line
Was a long enough life for a soldier

Your day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all her words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you
She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you

When she no longer needs you
She wakes up, she makes up

The killer lives inside me
Yes, I can feel him move
Sometimes, he's lightly sleeping
In the quiet of his room
But then, his eyes
Will rise and stare through mine
He'll speak my words and slice my mind
Inside
Yes, the killer lives

Opening lines or opening verse? Some people (most) seem to be struggling with the concept.
Anything more than 2 lines is disqualified in my opinion.

Me & Magdalena we're driving south through Monterey
As the sun is slowly sinking into a distant ocean wave.

Step out the front door like a ghost into the fog,
Where no one notices the contrast of white on white.
