WC of WH Players: Group 32
Please vote for whichever player you like best, using the poll, which will be added shortly. They don't have to be the best at football, just your favourite, the player you have good memories of etc. The thread can also be a good place to discuss the players.
The final group...
ENNER VALENCIA
ANDY CARROLL
MARLON HAREWOOD
ALVIN MARTIN

Re: WC of WH Players: Group 32
Alvin Martin. England international and a long time servant of the club.
My own memories include the header that was handled against the bar in the last minute of extra time against Liverpool in the ‘81 League Cup Final which led to Tonka’s equalising penalty and the hat-trick v Newcastle in ‘86 against three ‘keepers; Chris Hedworth, Martin Thomas and a certain Peter Beardsley.
It’s Stretch for me.

Alvin for me too, one of those childhood heroes. Pretty sure he'll get through here but it will be interesting to see if he can compete against tougher opposition in the next round.
By the way, this can also be the thread for everyone to complain about players that were left out of the 128

"He's got no hair, but we don't care...Alvin, Alvin Martin"
I did like Harewood though. 500 grand, what a bargain.

Can’t believe Ralph Milne didn’t make the list.Korea Hammer wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 8:12 am Alvin for me too, one of those childhood heroes. Pretty sure he'll get through here but it will be interesting to see if he can compete against tougher opposition in the next round.

Not a complaint, but I have to say I enjoy all this a lot. It gives me the opportunity to learn a lot, and it is a very enjoyable read.Korea Hammer wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 8:12 amBy the way, this can also be the thread for everyone to complain about players that were left out of the 128

I can only echo what our Gallic friend has said, Korea. It's been very enjoyable . Although if it cuts into your KUMB AotY duties I will cheerfully throttle you. xxx

I'm learning a lot and I've been going since 1977. One of the best threads ever on this forum.

Korea.
Would you consider having the Repka v Ashton debate later today, leaving a clear run for Monday, the start of the week, as we move into the last 32 ?

Re: WC of WH Players: Group 32
I think that's a good plan and I will put it up shortly.
However, I think we may need a rest day anyway as the polls tend to run 24 hours and I won't have the winners of Group 32 or the play off until after I'm at work on Monday.
So, I think Round 2 will have to start on Tuesday morning.

Re: WC of WH Players: Group 32
The only other problem would be if Group 32 produced a tie but I think that's unlikely enough to chance it

A rest day sounds good tbh. Let everybody catch their breath ! They have one at Wimbledon so why not ?Korea Hammer wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 10:19 am I think that's a hood plan and I will put it up shortly.

Re: WC of WH Players: Group 32
One of the easiest choices so far.
Saw Stretch play for the reserves and he headed a ball that went the length of the pitch. He was being spoken about as a real prospect way back then. Won’t forget his away debut at Wrexham when he had a real stinker but look how he recovered! Nearly 600 games and just got better and better as he got older.
Then, of course, there was the moment of the season when his son made a winning debut at Chelsea. We could see them embrace after and I’m not afraid to admit it made me well up. Things like that - the serendipitous folding of time - mean more to me than league placing.
I’m backing Alvin to get to the later stages of this.

Re: WC of WH Players: Group 32
On another day "Marlon Martin Interior Decorator*" would walk this...
*you either know or you don't.
Enner was a player not really cut off for the prem, a few decent goals though such as the Hull screamer and the near post Bournemouth free kick.
Andy Carroll? Some times unplayable...most of the time unavailable. Did deliver some genuinely great goals for us though. That overhead against Palace still one of our time top goals.
