World cup. Anyone unexpectedly enjoying it?

Post by bonzosbeard »

I've been very suprised by it. I'm trying to avoid the host nation controversy. Last couple of days I've been mesmerised by enjoying great games and forgetting the Premier league.

Qatar and everything surrounding it aside, in all honesty not really

Most of the games have been pretty dull with very little action.

Been nice having a few upsets but all in all its been pretty poor so far.

The World Cup in Brazil was great from start to finish, one of the best there has been. This one has been pretty forgettable.

Already 5 goalless draw compared to just 1 in the entirety of the previous WC.

Lol I've actually had big furry foot socks on watching some of the games. It's definitely the first world cup in my life I've had to decide to putting heating on or use a blanket.

I agree Bonzo, I have very much enjoyed it. The Group games are always a bit of a Curates Egg, but overall very good I feel. Personally, I like seeing other 'World' nations play, particularly when they give a more established team a bloody nose. Its what it is all about after all. It also makes a nice break from the repetiveness of the Premier League. Of course they (Qatar) should never been given the games, but now its on I dont give a toss about the politics.

t'is weird I agree.

last WC I was working soccer camps at Rice Uni in 'ouston. about 110 degrees most of the time plus about 90% humidity.

now I'm sitting here in tee shirt and shorts, with several windows open as it's pretty much almost the middle (or getting there) of our summer !!!

a nice balmy 72 degrees here - not sure what that is celcius as we very rarely use it..

games start around 6 a.m. last one at 2 p.m. all my time of course.

enjoying loads of games, locals went bananas over the last 2 games, and I expect much of the same on Tuesday too..

I've enjoyed the upsets. Japan beating Germany, Canada playing so well against Belgium and starting so well today. Costa Rica, Morocco, Saudi Arabia. Loved the last ten minutes of Iran v Wales.

Maybe not great games but great moments. Brothernero you're a great poster here and I value your opinion. I think maybe as I expected naff all I've enjoyed how it's gone so far.

Something to have on in the background.

Wouldn't say I'm enjoying it though.

Not as much as usual. games are at 2am, 5am, 8am & 11am so I only see the last two.

But I usually really enjoy watching English fans in those big outdoor venues throwing beer over each other when we score, which ain't happening this time around.

I’m the opposite. It’s the worst World Cup since the South African one and runs it close for the worst in my life.

Mate if my post came across as rude I can assure you that was not my intention. So apologies.

I love the World Cup but just feel this one so far has been totally underwhelming.

Fingers crossed it gets better

Nothing will ever be as bad as the South African one and those god awful noise pollution trumpet things. Forgotten what they were called.

Not at all BN. :newthumb:

I think the last round of group games and knock out stages will be the real test.

Tbh The Spain Germany game is a bit underwhelming so far.

I've enjoyed it, and knew I would.

It's the world cup. The greatest sporting tournament in the world, bar none.

The circus around who the host is and all the politics have no impact on the games on the pitch.

Japan beating Germany, Saudi Arabia beating Argentina, Morocco beating Belgium.

There'll be more to come, and that's just a few group games.

I'm hopefully yet I can combine a Christmas piss up with England winning the world cup final. :scarfer:

Here and there. I woke up this morning wanting to sit with my morning coffee watching West Ham though. The joy of the World Cup normally is that it fills the vacuum of ‘no football’. This time it’s starting to feel like it’s denying the football I want to watch. I’m starting to want it to hurry up and be done.

Having just recently retired I can watch all the games if I want.
I haven't but I could.

However the games I've watched so far have given me hope for England's chances.

No stand out teams as far as can see, every team seems to have a weak link, including us of course.

Its great to see so many surprise results and that obviously helping to deflect away from the other issues regarding the competition
