WC of WH Players: Round 2 Group C

Post by Korea Hammer »

Please vote for whichever player you like best, using the poll, which will be added shortly. They don't have to be the best at football, just your favourite, the player you have good memories of etc. The thread can also be a good place to discuss the players.

Form guide: Noble trounced everyone in his group with a Bondsesque 86% of the vote. Meanwhile, Geoff Hurst and Frank Lampard saw off Tim Breacker and Clyde Best respectively with around 70% of theirs. In contrast, there was a bit of an upset as Pop Robson beat Carlton Cole by just 4 votes in one of the closes groups of the round.

Sir Geoff Hurst.

We’re gonna lose some real quality during this round.

Noble will get my vote. I respect our history but Hurst was before my time and I have a much stronger emotional connection to Noble. In fact, I can only really think of one player I'd vote for over him.

I never saw Geoff Hurst either but I couldn’t bring myself to vote for anybody but the only player to score a hat-trick in a WC Final, and of course the bags of goals he scored for us.

This is like one of those votes you'd rather abstain from.
How do you make a decision ?
Eenie meanie minie mow.

Everyone of these legends can justifiably go through, and there wouldn't be many complaints.

On this occasion I'm going to go against my more recent decision process.
I've tended to go for players who were my heroes when I was younger.
But on this occasion I'm going with Noble.

The other three have played in teams that gave me a lot of joy and great memories.

There's something different about Noble.
We all know his title is Mr West Ham and he truly is that.
He's not even close to being one of our greatest footballers, but on this occasion he gets my vote because West Ham means so much to him, and we get him for that.

Maybe our manager one day
Who knows

The key is to take it all with a pinch of salt. It’s just a bit of fun.

The other two are here in their own right but it has to be between Frank (674 appearances, two FA Cups, one CWC runner-up, one League Cup runner-up) and Hurst (one FA Cup, one CWC, one World Cup, one League Cup runner-up).

Whilst the latter gave us bragging rights for our lifetimes over the rest of English football, and remains the only player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup Final I'm plumping for the former - purely because he's responsible for the greatest fan-made song heard on the terraces at West Ham...

That’s a competition in itself. Dailly, Ludo, Pop, Standen…

I’m going to ponder this vote awhile. One thing’s for sure though - the Noble song was pretty crap.

So based on KH’s mandate of favourite
I’ve tried to press Nobes and Pop at same time

It didn’t work … my vote is for Mark Noble

Tough bloody group. Frank Snr was about the joy of that period, things just seemed more fun looking back. I have gone for Noble but with a huge nod to Sir Geoff. Noble, behaved towards the club how I always like to imagine Hurst and the like behaved but in an era I saw. Stick a few players on the same wavelength round him and the boy could flat out play as well.

I voted Noble, then instantly regretted not voting for Hurst, while feeling like a traitor to both Pop and Frank SNR.

Tough one this. I never saw Hurst but love that a hammer is still the only player to score a hat-trick and I cried when as a ten year old he cleared off to WBA / Stoke - I can’t remember where he went first.

For me at various times I liked Lampard and Noble. For differing reasons I’m more ‘meh’ about them both nowadays - I wish that wasn’t the case but that’s just the way it is.

I doubled Pop’s vote as I still ‘like’ him to this very day. He was in the team when I started going and I cared about West Ham far, far more than was healthy or sensible. And to be honest I just have more fondness for these old players than the majority of the current ones, as good as they are.

Love the commentary for Lampard's goal but I've never been a fan of the song. Ryhming ' over ' with err...let's see... ' over '.
