Quiz - Last WHU players to Play for the World Cup Countries

Post by kel »

I started wondering who was the last West Ham player to play for a couple of the countries, then it grew to all the world cup teams. Some of which I guessed correctly and others not so. :angryred:
So I thought I'd share the 'fun' with you lot.

Can you name the last West Ham player (with the criteria listed below) to play for each of the countries at the 2022 World Cup Finals?

Criteria:
  • Is no longer a West Ham player
  • Is not a member of a World Cup playing squad at the 2022 finals
  • Was not on loan to West Ham at the time of playing
Argentina -
Australia -
Belgium -
Brazil -
Cameroon -
Canada -
Costa Rica -
Croatia -
Denmark -
England -
France -
Germany -
Ghana -
Mexico -
Portugal -
Senegal -
Switzerland -
USA -
Wales -

The following countries have no qualifying players for the criteria above: Ecuador, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Netherlands, Poland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, Tunisia, and Uruguay.

Try to resist the temptation to Google.

Argentina - Tevez
Australia - O'Neill
Belgium - van der Elst
Brazil - Andersen.
Cameroon - Song.
Canada - That young defender that we kept loaning out about ten years ago? Otherwise, Craig Forrest.
Costa Rica - Paulo Wanchope
Croatia - Suker (still their top scorer?)
Denmark - Rieper?
England - I wanted to say Carlton, but I think it's Carroll
France - Payet
Germany - Hitzelsperger?
Ghana - Paintsil
Mexico - Little Pea
Portugal - Paulo Futre (their WC top scorer too?) Although we had that centre back that could leap like a salmon that we strangely off-loaded to the Turkish league after a season, if he got a cap?
Senegal - Kouyate
Switzerland - ........
USA - Spector
Wales - Collins.

They last qualified at least 2 decades before Ginge was born, I believe, so probably not him.

Unless I misunderstood, the OP didn't say they had to have played at a World Cup, just to have played for a country which is at this year's World Cup.

There are a couple of former players that are in the current World Cup squads which the OP says don't count - it's the OP's rules, but I would argue that they are the last former West Ham players to play for those countries.

But there is a bit of ambiguity: how is 'last' defined - in the case of two players that played for West Ham and a certain nation in the same time frame, is it the last to play for West Ham, or the last to play for their country? And does it only count playing for their country while at West Ham?

For my answers above, I tried to guess that capped players on when they last played for West Ham.

Zabaleta for Argentina? Or did they have to play for West Ham while representing their side in a World Cup - I don't think he played for Argentina while with us.

I don't think I understand the question!

Clarification: They did not need to play at a world cup, any cap is fine.

Correct

True, but i felt that would make it too easy, so Valencia, Kouyate and Ayew do not count

But there is a bit of ambiguity: how is 'last' defined - in the case of two players that played for West Ham and a certain nation in the same time frame, is it the last to play for West Ham, or the last to play for their country? And does it only count playing for their country while at West Ham?
Clarifaction: Only playing for their country whilst at West Ham. If you are referring to Tevez and Mascherano, Javier left a few months before Carlos, hence why you are correct.

That's fair enough. I do enjoy these things, and once I started thinking I realised some were a lot more recent than I initially expected.
We have another former player in one of the World Cup squads, too. I'm not sure he got capped before leaving us though.
Australia - O'Neill - not quite
England - I wanted to say Carlton, but I think it's Carroll - Neither
Of course, I'm wrong for both Australia and England - my two nationalities
I can think of an Aussie who later went on to play for the Socceroos senior team but that was some time after he left West Ham, I think.

Cameroon - Song. - which one?
Rigobert "not Rio" Song. (Alex Song was only on loan to us, I think.)

Canada - That young defender that we kept loaning out about ten years ago? . - Defenders name?
I've since looked up the defender's name so I can't answer that. I expected to see him in this World Cup, but unsurprisingly he is injured. I also wasn't sure he actually played a competitive match for us, but I suppose his appearance against Astra Giugiu counts, no matter how much I want to forget it

Denmark - Rieper? - No

Portugal - Paulo Futre (their WC top scorer too?) Although we had that centre back that could leap like a salmon that we strangely off-loaded to the Turkish league after a season, if he got a cap? - neither - Manuel de Costa went on to play for Morocco, but long after he left us.
Pleased you figured out who I was thinking of. Didn't know he went on to play for Morocco - with a tweak of your criteria he might have been a fiendish answer.

Senegal - Kouyate - No, disallowed as he is in the current squad
Must have been that "mayhem"-causer with the mysterious back injuries then. I'll let someone else answer.

Switzerland - ........
I was trying to remember the name of a more recent player so finally had to use Google, but I settled on the same answer as kenthammer.

Didn't get his first cap until about 4 years after leaving us.
