Messi all day long. The greatest to ever kick a ball. The consistency, how he has remained at the top of his game is nothing short of remarkable. He has remained in the elite level category for over 15 years. He’s arguably been the best player in the world during that entire period.

Messi’s honour list obviously vastly outweighs Diego’s as well but I do think he needs to win today to really claim that best ever spot.

People will always say well he played in one of the best club sides ever. It was one of the best club sides ever because of him. All those unbelievable players in that side and year in, year out, he was the key player in that team.

If we're talking pure ability, it has to Messi doesn't it?

Would Messi have been able to dominate in Diego's era? I think so.

Would Maradona be able to dominate in Lionel's? I'm not so sure.

Maradona for me, absolute genius with a football, what he did at Napoli was phenomenal.

Messi is Mr consistency.
Can you be workmanlike and genius at the same time.
I think in Messi's you can.
He's the ultimate team player come individual genius.
Today's match so far tells me that Messi is enjoying this match as much as a team as he is his own individual performance.

Maradona basically wanted to do do everything himself.
Which in some ways makes him the better overall player, but maybe more frustrating as a team mate.
Its very tough to call, but I think for all his flaws Maradona was the better individual
But Messi wins it for me because he comes across as a more rounded player, both individually and collective player with his team mates

I think Maradona is the most skilful player ever. Pele is the Daddy, but Maradona was just magical.

He was the Paul Daniels of football.

Messi is excellent but isn't half the player Maradona was.
Maradona is the Paul Daniels of football but Messi is the Lance Burton!

That sounds like an argument in favour of Maradona.

Lance Burton never married Debbie Mcgee. The Lovely Debbie Mcgee.

True. He did get paid 100M and had his own theatre at the Monte Carlo Casino in las Vegas though!

I was in Buenos Aires in November, arrived the day they lost to Saudi Arabia, and I was actually surprised at how well loved Messi was.

Messi shirts and his face plastered everywhere, I was of the impression the Argies hasn’t taken to him, like they had with Diego.

It will probably go up another gear again now.

I don't understand the reasoning for Maradonna?

World class player obviously who dragged his country to a world cup but thats it?

In that case why isn't Zidane the greatest of all time? Why isnt Brazilian Ronaldo?

Most goals Maradonna scored in Europe in a season was 23

Messi beats that 13 times over with a high score of 73......(73)

There is no debate

Its like calling Geoff Hurst the greatest of all time

I suspect you’ve not seen a lot of Italian football of that period. The majority of teams made George Graham look reckless.

The 23 goal season was whilst he was at Barca

I probably followed Italian football more than English football back then and whilst the teams were defensive, there was plenty of others who scored a lot more than Maradonna

Before this World Cup I'd have said Maradona no question.

Now? Messi has scored 13 World Cup goals and provided 8 assists and now has a winners medal.

Messi shades it now for me.

Maradona was before my time, so I can't really judge fairly, but did he adapt his game like Messi has as he got older?

The way Messi has gone from winger, to false 9, to Ten, surely puts him ahead of Maradona.

Maradona for me but I find the whole “GOAT” debate nauseating.

Wouldn’t begrudge anyone suggesting any of Maradona, Messi, Pele, Cristiano Ronaldo and (Brazilian) Ronaldo.

Cruyff surely has more of a shout than the two Ronaldos?

Come on, people. If, like me, you played hundreds of games and in one of the most important games an opposition player deliberately handled the ball into the goal and got away with it, wouldn't that stand against him forever more because it's something you would never do?

Maradona - obviously supremely gifted - had to cheat to win in a game we hold to be "beautiful" to quote Pele (my personal hero for so long).

Messi, although flawed (aren't we all?), is the man I'd point to who embraces the essence of the game, notwithstanding everything that comes with being an icon.

Congratulations, Leo. I think you ARE the greatest. Respect, and thanks for being a worthy role model to my son.

Not for me but again, I can’t really begrudge someone going for him. I just couldn’t put him above Maradona myself.

George Best is another who’s probably up there too.

I think the majority that have gone for Messi, probably weren't around when Maradona in the 80's or just ignorant.

The Italian League was the best in Europe. The best players played there then.It was where the money was,For Maradona to go there and lift 2 titles for an unfashionable club (at the time). That is their only 2 League titles. It's like Messi going to Barnsley and winning them.

I will agree that Messi has been more consistent and is one of the very best, but Maradonna was kicked from pillow to post and why he got injured so much. I never see ANYBODY do what Maradona could do with a Football.
