I think it's Mickey Flannigan who sums it up with how the wine industry has convinced women that wine is a drink that it's ok to smash at any opportunity rather than a drink to be avoided over dinner in moderation.Greatest Cockney Rip Off wrote: ↑Wed Feb 15, 2023 12:56 pm Indeed. It's almost expected that with meals, wine is the perfect companion and positively encouraged which again leads to that almost stealth-like alcohol consumption.

Having a second child has seriously made me cut-down on drinking
The thought of having to deal with a manic 6 year old, and a 1 year old that doesn't sleep much means the hangovers are just unbearable

A bloke drinking a bottle of wine is definitely seen as more 'acceptable' than drinking a few pints

The very best times of my life have been spent in pubs. They are the best places on Earth.

Also, relatively speaking wine is now quite cheap . . .
When I was still studying in the early 80s, a pint of beer in the pub was 60p, and the cheapest white wine in the convenience store next door was Laski Rizling at 2.99 (I was a student after all, and this was Sarf London in 1982)
Beer is now what? Six pounds? 10x increase
Cheapo Laski Rizling is probably 4.99. 2x increase

Well spotted that. I never realised but yes a pint was just over a quid when I was 18 but remember a bottle of wine about £3.BalaamBoy wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 11:49 am Also, relatively speaking wine is now quite cheap . . .

£6 can still get you a drinkable wine if you're choosing carefully but pint in local is now £4.50/£5

Re: Sobriety
are you not comparing shop bought wine with pub priced beers though?bonzosbeard wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 11:42 pm Well spotted that. I never realised but yes a pint was just over a quid when I was 18 but remember a bottle of wine about £3.

Shop bought wine (cheapish) £5 - 6, pack of 4 (non-export) beers about £5 surely? So you’d get about 4 (5?) glasses of wine for roughly the same price as 4 pint-sized cans of beer (again, nothing special, relatively cheapish).
Go to the supermarket and you will probably get a decent deal on a 4 for 3 deal on an export or decent bottle of international beer.

Re: Sobriety
I'm giving up drinking during the week. Too expensive and it's getting just a bit too nice for my own good. Been surprisingly easy, not had a beer since Saturday. Struggling to get to sleep though.

Re: Sobriety
I certainly don’t know when to stop when I have a sesh. At my most irresponsible, I’d leave my local and then get transport in to town ending up in a nightclub on my own until 3am.
On Friday just gone, I didn’t go out until 9pm and had change from £20 when I got in. I never leave early. I’m always out until kicking out time.

That doesn’t sound enormously healthy, dude. Isn’t there anything else you could be doing with your time and money that doesn’t involve socialising with drink?

This was a near decade ago. I haven’t been out out for years. Pre-lockdown.dasnutnock3 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 21, 2023 9:27 pm That doesn’t sound enormously healthy, dude. Isn’t there anything else you could be doing with your time and money that doesn’t involve socialising with drink?
I go to football. There’s always a drink going.

Re: Sobriety
A few years back I used to be much worse, I had what could only be called a self-destruct mind set. I’d go out and drink without caring what risks I was placing myself into.btajim - mcfc wrote: ↑Tue Feb 21, 2023 9:01 pm I certainly don’t know when to stop when I have a sesh. Moving out to where we now are has possibly saved me, as I can’t really go anywhere, even if I wanted to (nothing out here apart form a couple of pubs).
When I lived overseas I was a terrible menace (to myself) and looking back think I am lucky to still be alive, mostly because at the time we lived in what would be called the central districts, so clubs, bars and more were on our doorstep..
I used to cover Estonia - met up with some contractors for a project, the following night we met up for food and drinking, they wanted to go on to a ‘titty bar’, which I didn’t fancy. So I left them, found a club and basically forced my way in, got thrown out for being too drunk. Had a particular top on at the time, so lost the top and managed to get back into the club, one of the bouncers saw me and a group of them corralled me into a back room – I honestly thought that I was going to get a proper kicking – managed to keep to my feet and in the end just a bust up mouth, nose and both black eyes later was thrown out again. Decided to call it a night and when asked what happened to me, blamed it on the icy streets and too much drink.
I was in Bangkok, once woke up asleep on a bench outside of a subway, can’t remember much other than being inside at one point and ordering a footlong (whey hey!!) – and I don’t mean lady-boy special.. god knows why I didn’t just get myself home as it was only a few blocks away, must have just blacked out. People were coming up to me and checking if I was ok. FFS some of those might even have been staff at the place I worked at..
In Sri Lanka I made friends with one particular rickshaw driver, who managed to get me home one night after drinking myself stupid and again getting into a fight with some bouncers. Bearing in mind this wasn’t long after the civil war, people were not long ago being ‘disappeared’, so he explained to me I was literally risking my life getting into such a state. TBF, I did calm down after that particular episode.
Sounds like BS, but there are more incidents that I can’t go into as I would be too ashamed to repeat.
