Re: Sobriety
I’m out for a couple on my own and have just spotted a lad who was seriously ill late last year. He was hospitalised with cirrhosis of the liver and told to pack drinking in. He did for a few weeks but started again. Lo and behold he’s pissed.
One night his girlfriend was in the pub crying because she was so worried about him. We all sat round her trying to calm her. Needless to say she left him and is seeing someone else.
I’m unsure how old he is. Maybe 45. He’ll not make 50 the way he’s going in. One night he was shaking my hand for twenty seconds telling me what a “proper nice bloke” I was.
It’s actually really sad when you think about it.

It is really sad Jim but there's only so much that anyone can do for him.btajim - mcfc wrote: ↑Sun Apr 09, 2023 10:38 pm I’m out for a couple on my own and have just spotted a lad who was seriously ill late last year. Look at George Best; got a new liver but just couldn't stay off it, poor bloke.
It's a serious & too often, fatal illness.

As tough and as illegal as it would be I'd rather be taken to some mental hospital and them lock me in a room rather than give me freedom and access to alcohol were I that far gone .

Re: Sobriety
I understand most of his family have disowned him and he’s fathered a couple of kids with different women he has nothing to do with. I’m even unsure what he does.
Imagine a gutter Scouse accent shouting “Hey, Welshie! We’ve drawn yous in the World Cup, ain’t we? We’ll have to watch it together, like. Have some banter, lad!” It never happened.

Re: Sobriety
A week in to my month off: went out on Saturday and yesterday. Saturday, an occasional drinking buddy spent the evening trying to get me to have a beer but was unsuccessful.Yesterday nobody was bothered and much Perrier/spicy ginger beer was consumed and I drove a few mates home, which was nice.

Re: Sobriety
Less than happy with my consumption over the easter period (and in advance). Had the parents in law over for ten days, and that meant there was some extra hands to help with the kids etc. So had a few the evening they arrived, quite a few over two social events on the past two weekends, and had a few at the game on Wednesday. I made an Easter Sunday roast and had a few bottles of lager while preparing it. I also had two pints in Upminster last Tuesday. So this was really as much as I've had since October.
The hangover though has been a lesson, and I'm committed to returning to more abstemious habits.

Twatty behaviour, and there’s nothing good about their intentions. Encouraging anyone that’s abstaining from substances of abuse is wankerism of the highest order.btajim - mcfc wrote: ↑Tue Apr 11, 2023 11:47 am Despite good intentions, trying to get someone to drink when they don’t is unfair.

Re: Sobriety
Very twatty behaviour indeed.
Fair play to you guys, who are still going strong, and thriving because of it.
Absolutely marvellous achievement

I more meant trying to get out and meet people etc. I think that came out a bit wrong.dasnutnock3 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 11, 2023 12:36 pm Twatty behaviour, and there’s nothing good about their intentions. Encouraging anyone that’s abstaining from substances of abuse is wankerism of the highest order.
Yes, it’s unfair on the person who doesn’t drink.

Re: Sobriety
I don’t know what’s instigated this but something inside me has just decided to minimise going out. I think I’m just going to socialise when I’m going to football and that’s not particularly often anymore. I’m getting bored of it all. I need a break.

Re: Sobriety
A little wagon-falling when I went to Snowdonia a couple of weeks ago, but very proud of myself that I've layed off it since. I got to the point where I was getting fed up with taking two days to start feeling relatively normal afterwards, as well as paying for the privilege to do so.
Total waste of money.

Re: Sobriety
Having a sesh every now and again doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.
I’m down in Swansea in May so that’ll be the next big one. I’ll otherwise drink very little. Maybe one beer with a pizza or burger.

Re: Sobriety
After 1227 days (3 years, 4 months and change for those who don't like arithmetic), I had an alcoholic beverage (well 2).
Not sure how it came about, hard to explain but it just felt right, after ironically the missis suggesting having a drink. I was planning on reintegrating drink to a massively more controlled extent (all inclusive in Mexico in August and didn't want that to be the first time in years).
Had two cans of 'Elvis Juice', a lovely grapefruity IPA. I had bought 4 tins, but 2 felt enough and stopped. That is unlike my previous modus operandi of buying a crate and drinking until all the booze in the house was gone. So fingers crossed I've learned from the sobriety to have a better (more modest?) relationship woth alcohol.

Re: Sobriety
Careful mate, . Well done on the restraint but you don't want it to be a slippery slope. As long as you recognise the signs and can still knock it on the head before finishing the crate, you're ok I suppose. My only expperience with addiction was cigarettes and I know from experience that "Just the one" fag was the end of many attempts to give up.chelmsfordhammer91 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 15, 2023 9:17 pm After 1227 days (3 years, 4 months and change for those who don't like arithmetic), I had an alcoholic beverage (well 2).

I've got another 2 weeks to go and I'm feeling better. Eating sensibly and not compensating with sugary drinks has led to looser jeans and maybe changing belt notches by May...
Looking forward to the first pint (concert on the 30th) but not actually missing it at all;, if that makes sense.

Re: Sobriety
I normally go to karaoke on a Monday but the pub will be full of Liverpool fans as they’re on. If I do go out later then it’s Diet Coke. I’ve not been in a good place recently and a depressant drink will not help.

Re: Sobriety
I think that’s the last time I go out for Diet Coke. It’s the little things when everyone is merry. You get nudged in to and they don’t apologise because they don’t know they’ve done it. They won’t move out of the way when there’s no space at the bar. It’s the odd drunken comment they make which they consider lighthearted but, in reality, isn’t very nice.

Re: Sobriety
I'm not a teetotaler, but compared to the carnage of 20-25 years I hardly drink anymore, never anything else than in moderation. I actually feel stupid for having a couple of pints now, escpecially on my own - which I used to love a bit too much. That's a mental change that just happened and I don't think it'll change.
