⚽ Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 West Ham Utd (14/1/23)

Post by Shabu »

Saturday January 14th at 3pm

Wolves welcome West Ham on Saturday in a relegation battle.

They sit one point behind us on 14 with -16 goal difference. Since the world cup they've beaten Everton, most to Man Utd then drew with Villa.

They've also drawn with Liverpool in the FA Cup and beaten Gillingham in the League Cup.

They play in the quarter finals against Forest on Wednesday so we'll see how that affects them against us.

We've won four of the last five v them. Before that we lost four on the trot.

Not sure if Zouma is back for this but Coufal should be recovered.

I'll guess my team later in the week but a win here means we're MASSIVE again.

Wolves 1-2 West Ham

“We’ve got a chance, Shabu started the thread”. :scarfer:

I wasn’t so optimistic about us winning this game a week or so ago. But for some reason I now don’t think we’ll lose either. I’m feeling a 1-1 draw.

I reckon Moyes will play 9 of the starting 11 he played against Dirty Leeds. The only changes being Zouma in for Les. And probably Cresswell for Kehrer.

Ben 'clean sheet' Johnson to keep his place, please, Dave.

I am getting a touch worried about Scam's repeated absences, but hope that he, Paq, Rice and Bowen all start, so that the nascent understanding between them can be worked on further.

Fornals must also be involved, as much as I can see the logic in rewarding Benrahma for his great goal last evening.

Aguerd coming back to full fitness is also an important cog in the machine

Their PL team and formation appears to be pretty much set in stone, and they don't play three at the back anymore.

It will be Sa-Semedo-Bueno-Kilman-Collins-Neves-Nunes-Moutinho-Chan-Podence-Costa unless there are injuries or the manager has a sudden change of heart.

Fabianksi

Coufal Dawson Zouma (🤞🏼) Aguerd Emerson

Paqueta Rice

Soucek

Bowen Scamacca

All for getting your best players on the pitch (Benrahma) but I think we need to be more solid until we’re out of this mess. I would like to see Kehrer alongside Zouma but if Zouma is touch and go I think we’ll go with Dawson.

Don’t expect a pretty game but if we defend like we did against Brentford we’ll be fine.

Statistically, they look to have a problem in the striker department. They create plenty and put plenty in the box... but in terms of % of shots on target, expected goals, and actual goals, they're amongst the worst in the league (along with us). They look to be worse than us defensively, conceding more and having a higher expected goals against.

Anyway, that's enough of the stats - I think we'll win this one if we approach it with the same system we used and the same intensity we had against Leeds, and if the injured players are fit again. We'd have won Leeds if it wasn't for the comedy defending so we just need a tweak or two in that department. We could grind out a draw easy enough with a 5 at the back... but we really need to start picking up a few wins against these type of teams.

Code: Select all

             Fabianski

Coufal Zouma Aguerd Emerson

          Soucek Rice

   Bowen Paqueta Fornals

               Scamacca

Agree, this is going to be a tough game. They looked so sharp and fluid against the scousers. They should have won the game and LFC played the strongest team possible.

Feel this is going to be a long 90 minutes. Wouldn't be against us soaking up pressure and being defensive.

That’s the team I’m leaning towards, but with the midfield set up in the same way it was at Leeds.

I’m still in 2 minds with regards to Fab still starting after recent league performances. But that’s probably harsh after playing well and picking up a clean sheet last night. Areola may not be fit anyway.

-------------------fabainski

------kehrer -----dawson -- aguard

Johnson ----rice -----paquata ----emerson

----------------------fornals
---------------bowen scamacca

Soon as zouma fit he can replace Dawson

I think this would actually suit kehrer ... Plenty of support and he is fast

Liverpool have looked a shadow of themselves recently and I believe we will match wolves for desire which is all you can ask. I'm not fearing them.
My biggest concern is the media attention they are getting about VAR screwing them over. Hope the officials don't feel they are owed a decision. Subconsciously, of course 🙄.
Still can't believe how the Summerville challenge on Coufal was swept under the carpet, as if that was in front of Arteta he would have exploded in rage and likely have called 999 for attempted murder while doing VAR Square signals with his fingers.

Areola
Dawson Zouma Aguerd
Johnson Rice Paqueta Emerson
Fornals
Bowen Scamacca

Praying Zouma is fit. Dawson to deal with Jimenez, Fornals gives us a bit more in the forward positions than Soucek did which will hopefully get Bowen and Scamacca more involved.

Emerson and Johnson should be able to get forward with reckless abandon as they'll have a solid back three and Rice as well.

Wolves were absolutely robbed at Anfield in the cup. We will need to work hard to match them.

Hopefully another new face or 2 will come in beforehand. I suspect zouma will start and Moyes will stick with a back 3 . I'd drop soucek for fornals as Tomas is woefully short on confidence. This will be a proper battle and let's hope wolves have an eye on the replay v the scousers . :crest:

Every game in the Premiership is a tough one. There are no walk overs and games are won or lost usually on fine margins. Every team seems to be capable of beating anyone on their day. Liverpool are struggling this year, so I wouldn't necessarily use that game as a yardstick. I do agree though I would be happy with a boring 1-0 wrong type of win through a lucky wrong type of goal if that is what is needed.

Well done Shabu!

I'm slightly optimistic on this one. Don't think it'll be pretty, but an ugly win for us.

2-1.

He is pretty quick.

Unfortunately he's also completely lacking in judgement, complacent, prone to rash challenges, inclined to switch off and suffering a crisis in confidence (legitimately so in my view).
