Re: Today's celebrity death is...
I can’t believe Andy Rourke has died. Very sad.
On a rare trip to the U.K. I made a pilgrimage to Salford Lads Club literally two days ago. Absolutely love The Smiths and Andy was a key component especially on this song :

Very sad indeed. What a brilliant musician he was too, so talented even when he was just a teenager. RIP Andy

Re: Today's celebrity death is...
I loved The Smiths so much, all the tributes and songs on the radio today have taken me right back.
Saddest thought is I can never see the original 4-piece play live ever again. I always knew it was highly unlikely but while they were all alive there was hope...and now it's gone....I know it's over still I cling.
Thanks for being the best bassist in the best band of my youth Andy, God rest your soul you diamond.

Totally gutted for Andy and his family, the Smiths are my favorite band and like Junco Partner i always hoped ( i know, extremely unlikely) that 1 day they might get together again. Also, is the title of this thread a little like an American game show, it doesn't sit quite right.

Re: Today's celebrity death is...
Just seen Mike Joyce on BBC Breakfast News talking of his great friend and how he went over to New York in February to see him for what turned out to be the last time. It brought home just what a loss Andy Rourke is and at the age of 59 he was a mere two years older than me. Like many others I always clinged to the hope The Smiths would one day get back together, as unlikely as it ever was, but it was a feint hope nevertheless.
Morrissey himself has given a touching response to Andy:
“Sometimes one of the most radical things you can do is to speak clearly,When someone dies, out come the usual blandishments as if their death is there to be used. I'm not prepared to do this with Andy.
I just hope wherever Andy has gone that he's OK. He will never die as long as his music is heard. He didn't ever know his own power, and nothing that he played had been played by someone else.
His distinction was so terrific and unconventional and he proved it could be done. He was also very, very funny and very happy... At the end of it all, we hope to feel that we were valued. Andy need not worry about that ”
A fitting tribute.

That's a great shame. I always liked Ray. Big guy with a face and a frame for sword 'n' sandals-style productions, although he was in plenty of contemporary stuff too such as Dexter and the lead in the underrated superhero movie Punisher: War Zone (Alexander, 2008). He was excellent in Rome. 58 is no age at all.

Re: Today's celebrity death is...
Shocked to see this today, no age at all 58.
Three Musketeers , Vikings and best of all, Rome would be my favourite roles from him. Seen him interviewed and he came across as a genuine guy.
Very sad, RIP

Of all the high-profile nonces to get collared far too late, Rolf was somehow the most depressing. Seemed like a fantastic bloke on cartoon time, cartoon club and that animal hospital thing he used to present. Don't recall any suggestion he was a wrongun until very late into his career when a friend at the Beeb implied his carefully cultivated public image was hiding real darkness.

I've developed a decent heuristic for detecting paedos. If they work at the BBC, are male and over 50, assume they are a nonce. Hardly ever wrongdasnutnock3 wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2023 1:11 pm Of all the high-profile nonces to get collared far too late, Rolf was somehow the most depressing.
