Tennis 2023
Well after today, Andy Murray deserves this thread to be started.
Every time I think I can't admire him more, he reaches another level. He is a gladiator, not a sportsman.

Re: Tennis 2023
Saw his Twitter post and thought he'd retired. Once I'd investigated more i realised. So unlucky to play tennis in this era. Would have tripled or quadrupled his Grand Slam titles without Federer, Nadal and Djockovic.

Re: Tennis 2023
So this round he waited until he was 2 sets down, and 2 -5 down before he decided to start playing.
Now 4 - 2 up in the 4th set.
Just incredible

Almost 3am in Melbourne. They really like to put the players through it over there. If it isn't stupidly late finishes it is playing at the hottest time of the year at the hottest time of the day.

The late starts at both the US OPEN and AUS OPEN are utterly stupid and unfair.Vic_Watson wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 3:56 pm Almost 3am in Melbourne. No-one should be playing a Grand Slam match at 2 or 3 or 4am....which I've seen often.
Ridiculous.

What an athlete and what heart
It’s a massive ask, but how good would it be if he could finally win the Australian Open after 5 times a runner up down under.
We can but dream, in the meantime I’m going to watch that match again. Stunning comeback.

Re: Tennis 2023
I'll be surprised if he can even walk come Saturday. And he's up-against Bautista-Agut again. That was another long one back in 2019 (?) before the embarrassing retirement video was shown.

Re: Tennis 2023
Matches he used to win in 3 or 4 sets.....sometimes 5.
Are now nearly all now 4 or 5 sets.
At his age (and hip) that's the big problem.
Grass is still his best hope...it's more forgiving. But he owes nobody anything.
And Bautista-Agut is a horrible opponent because of it.

Re: Tennis 2023
I switched off listening at 2 - 5 down in the third set as I thought he was done. Imagine my surprise when I checked half an hour later.
Then in the last set when he was 4 - 5 down I had to leave work. I had a feeling he wasn't going to make it after all that effort.
Imagine my surprise when I checked half an hour later.
I mean ridiculous. There are no appropriate words really.

Re: Tennis 2023
I've just no idea what drives him on.
He's got loads of little uns.....a metal hip.....and unless a draw falls apart he will almost certainly not win another Grand Slam.....simply because he won't be able to repeat that over two weeks against the very best. Because he won't recover...
Rrrrrr yes, I do know......love of the game....and the challenge to prove people wrong.
And long may it go on...

Re: Tennis 2023
As DC said, the desire is ridiculous. He's not doing it for money, he's hurting himself out of pure love of the game and desire to reach the top one more time.

Re: Tennis 2023
Probably my favourite sportsperson of all time
Had an unbelievable year to reach number 1 in the world, that was such a gruelling schedule, 3 slams, 2 at Wimbledon...
Doesn't need to compete, after everything he's done, he's inspired many a people to pick up a racket...
Yet he goes and does this - how he has the determination, to get back up, and to compete at this level, is beyond me...
Can only dream he'd go on an unbelievable run this year at Wimbledon, take a 3rd crown there & call it on his own terms
But whenever he does call it, it'll be a sad day for tennis - and sport on the whole - to lose a warrior like Sir Andy!

Re: Tennis 2023
I am still in shock/awe at what Murray did today! Unbelievable.
Logic dictates he won’t be able to walk for the next week, let alone stand a chance of winning the thing, but we can only hope he keeps producing these incredible results!!
