Researched mine and found that my ancestors were lace makers who came to England from Belgium in the early 19th century and settled in London

Re: family tree Find my past/ancestry
I was at my mums once and she called me in to the front room in tears to say my dad’s half brother was on the phone. I hadn’t known he existed and we even had the same name.

Cheers GCRO.
Leonard Arthur Stagg
Service No. 5567412
Lance Corp.
Wiltshire Regiment.
Campaign medals.
Africa Star (1940-43)
Italy Star (1943-45)
France & Germany Star (1944-45)
War Medal 1939-1945
1939-1945 Star
Looking online (Wiki) at the Regiment and cross referencing the info with his campaign medals I assume he was with the 2nd Batallion, but I'm really not sure.
Anecdotally, my Mum 'remembers' that at the back end of the war (or post War) he was in the Middle East and she thinks he came home a fair while after many of her friends' Dads.
Thanks for your help, mate

Re: family tree Find my past/ancestry
Ah ... apologies mate, I misread that and thought it was WWI, not WW2. For WW2 records the only way you'll get them is via the MoD and you need to be a blood relative (which you obviously are). The details on how to do that are here:
https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-se ... es-records
If you want any info on the family I should be able to access that though.

Re: family tree Find my past/ancestry
I've seen peoples results of these dna things here in the States & they often will say 22% Great Britain then 17% Scots/Irish.
I'm guessing by Scots/Irish they mean Celtic but around 60/70% of White English are Celtic so what does Great Britain mean? Anglo Saxon? Scandinavian? A mix of them all?
Anyone shed any light on this?

Re: family tree Find my past/ancestry
How much info do you need to give them to get the ball rolling?
I’ve only got my mum left, and she’s a bit vague on my dad’s family, I know my great grandad was killed in a mustard gas attack, wouldn’t mind finding out more.

Almost nothing - you can start with just you. I've spent the last hour on ancestry's site, just joined on the free trial. Phoned my mum for a bit of info and got back to my great-great-grandfather as far as I can tell. Just don't let it become an obsession!

Give me his name, where he was from and I'll do the rest mate.
Re: family tree Find my past/ancestry
That's ok GCRO, thanks for offering anyway.
Cheers for the link too, I'll look into that.

Re: family tree Find my past/ancestry
I think as long as you do your own research, and not just rely on others it's accurate. Or as accurate as it can be. All it takes is one hidden indiscretion and it throws it all out.
One of the most mind blowing things I discovered about my lot was 2distant grandmother's from the Wiltshire lot shared their surnames with the places they were born and grew up. So presumably the family had been in that area for a good while.
There's the more depressing side,my 3rd x great grand mother died in Holborn workhouse and another(again from the Wiltshire lot was living and gave birth to her daughter(another grandmother) in the workhouse local to them.
One of the Clerkenwell grandmothers(X5) died in 1803 with £600 , according to her will l,which was a fortune back then. Yet she was living in Bear Alley,a notorious slum, and previously lived in Sharpe's alley, another hellhole. I have my theories, but they are not for here

Re: family tree Find my past/ancestry
I found a relative who my family were unaware of, he emigrated to Canada in 1914 and ended up serving in WW1 in the Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment) sadly though he was killed in action (1916) and is named on the Menin Gate Memorial Ypres.
