Modi's India
The BBC 2 part documentary on Narendra Modi is kicking off in india
It tells the story of Modi's complicity in ethnic riots in 2002 when he was chief minister of Gujarat and he and senior mmbers of his govt behaviour surrounding lynching of tose suspected of selling/eating beef.
It is well worth a couple of hours of your time.

Re: Modi's India
After pressure from the Modi government, it's been banned on Twitter by "free speech absolutist" Elon Musk.

Re: Modi's India
I work for a company with 1300 people. 1100 of those who work out of Bangalore. 150 in the US (HQ) 75% of which are Indian ex-Pat. In London, we have 45 people, 50% of which are ex-pat Indians, and 25% British-born Indians. The remainder is non-Indian.
So needless to say I am exposed to an awful of ethnic Indians and all of them love Modi - even the BBIs. He is considered to have made India a complete success on the world stage and taps into a level of Nationalism that would even make the most patriotic of John Bulls think it was OTT.
When things go right in India it's thanks to Modi and a progressive India. If things go badly, it's because of the British and the Empire. Believe it or not some even think that Sunak being in number 10 is a Modi success story.
The level of racism is also astounding. Whether that be BBI on ex-pat or ex-pat on BBI. Or BBI/Ex-Pat on white English - I was asked when I got back from Greece last year with a tan, whether I was trying to look more Indian so I could get a promotion. Ironically, promotions are always given to ex-pats and BBIs get preferential treatment when recruiting new job recs. I also get referred to as "you lot", "your type", "whitey", "your cousins".
Don't even mention Pakistan or Bangladesh.
It's an education, I can tell you. If I was a Guardian reader I would be in heaven repaying the debt of centuries of colonial rule.

Mate, knowing that you are a well paid banker, I'm sure it wouldn't even touch the sides if you ****ed out for the full cost of our colonial reparations.

But just as an update, I looked at my Linkedin feed and it's in meltdown.
Apparently, the BBC is a colonial flunky who should spend its time producing documentaries on the outdated institution of monarchy, the Koh-i-nor diamond and its shameful colonial past, not disrespecting the great Modi.

Re: Modi's India
The dismissive sinister nature of the interview with the reporter when quizzed about the massacre said it all.

Re: Modi's India
Rami Ranger Tory Peer and famously pro-Modi
Lord Ranger wrote to the BBC director general, Tim Davie, to complain about the film and demanded to know “if your Pakistani-origin staff were behind this nonsense”.
Ranger’s attacks on the BBC closely aligned with those made by the Indian government, which has dismissed the documentary as colonial propaganda.

Re: Modi's India
Conversely to RichieRiv's post, my girlfriend worked for Goldman Sachs in Bangalore, and is a local, for years and then moved to London to work for them here. Her mates here, also investment bankers, and over there, including the non bank lot, all hate Modi with a passion. I feel maybe the poorer Indian people like those politics and the wealthier ones perhaps can see it for what it is. But wouldn't say it's all completely one sided in favour of him.

Re: Modi's India
Slightly off topic but is it just me or do more people of Indian heritage lean conservative while more people of Pakistani heritage lean left/socialist/whatever the word is?

Re: Modi's India
It’s a bit more complex than that. There are more Muslim in India than Pakistan for a start.
In the UK, Modi fan boys have caused huge problems over the last decade. Last year they went on the rampage in Leicester.
There are Muslims/Sikh/Hindus/Jains in all political parties here, but Modi’s presence and his advocates are a blight on the UK political scene.

14% of India is MuslimBig George wrote: ↑Thu Feb 16, 2023 12:13 am It’s a bit more complex than that. There are more Muslim in India than Pakistan for a start.
96% of Pakistan is Muslim.
7% of London is Muslim.
So India is closer to London than Pakistan in that regard.
