5 Albums from the 1960's you want to be playing
From 01.01.1960-31.12.1969
5 albums that you'd have to have from that decade

Re: Desert Island Albums: Chapter One - 1960s
This is going to be difficult for me, the mid 60's to mid 70's was 'my time' and there's already been a good half dozen albums listed I could easily have picked. By the time I've come to post I've changed my mind umpteen times but by the same token when we get to the 80's I'm going to find it much less 'challenging'
So:
Goodbye.... Cream, (The 3 live tracks alone are brilliant)
Trout Mask Replica.. Captain Beefheart. (Could easily have gone for Safe As Milk, but can I spend the rest of my time without TMR?.. No)
In The Court Of The Crimson King..King Crimson ( Wow!, just wow!)
Led Zeppelin(1) (still my fave album of theirs having been introduced to part of it in Music class in school by a 'forward thinking' and, ahem! not unattractive music Miss.)
The Valentyne Suite... Colosseum ( Got get some jazz rock type stuff. The Title track(side 2) is simply magnificent, and right up my street)
I'm already 'missing' hearing dozens of Artists/ Albums that I can't 'take'

Re: Desert Island Albums: Chapter One - 1960s
Best Stones album, by a mile:
Other contenders:
This was a lot harder than I thought it would be - turns out that I don't have/like anywhere near as much 60s music as I thought, and even the albums which were possibles were often 1 or 2 good songs and a mountain of crappy filler.

Re: Desert Island Albums: Chapter One - 1960s
I drew up a long list for the 1960s and discarded all of the records that I didn't consider to be perfect. 4 or 5 of those have been other people's shouts*.
I think in future, I might divide the decades in half. There's too much variety in the 1970s to permit a choice of only 5!
* i.e.
MC5
Love
Small Faces
Beefheart, and
Dr John.

You could probably do individual years. especially for the 80s/90s.prophet:marginal wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 3:44 pm I think in future, I might divide the decades in half. There's too much variety in the 1970s to permit a choice of only 5!

Re: Desert Island Albums: Chapter One - 1960s
All mine are picked, mostly in the very first Proph-post, and I've been digging deep to come up with a few I love that have been overlooked to date...
Something Else by The Kinks (1967)
Any album that includes David Watts, Death of A Clown, Love Me Till the Sun Shines and still has room for the magnificent Waterloo Sunset deserves a shout.
Younger Than Yesterday by The Byrds (1967)
The Byrds signature twelve-string sound and unreal vocal harmonies are at their most intense here, the songs shimmer and glisten in a vaguely psychedelic glow. It's also the last album they recorded as a band, a working, functioning, co-operating band before Crosby annoyed everyone and McGuinn became dictator. It contains their best Dylan cover (and that's saying something), their most insanely insanely catchy pop number and two of their very best songs ever (which is also saying something), here's one...
Songs of Leonard Cohen by Leonard Cohen (1967)
The Montreal misrerabilist's debut became his defining work, the bohemian romanticism and exquisitely crafted songs became his trademark, but he never really topped Suzanne or So Long, Marianne for the rest of his long career.
Time for some straight shoot-outs from two legendary acts
Beggars Banquet v Let It Bleed is an unanswerable question answered only by a super-subjective choice as both are classics marking The Stones golden 3 or 4 album run of flawless rock & roll. So I'll go with the slightly dirtier, slightly sleazier and much more unsettling Let It Bleed (1969):
Revolver v Rubber Soul v Sgt Peppers v White Album - impossible to decide, but they'll all be deservedly picked by others, so I'll go with the one I listen to the most as an album from start to finish and it's Revolver (1966):
Pet Sounds, The Animals, Astral Weeks, Velvet Underground, The Band, Forever Changes....all make it on any other day.

Pleased to see Leonard making an appearance. That first album can be picked on Desert Island: Debuts...
