The most defensive thing you can possibly do is to keep the ball ! Literally.
Without it the opposition cannot score.
Guardiola is the most complete defensive coach in the world , the only difference is that by respecting the value of keeping a football, his teams ****ing hunt it down when they lose it, within seconds normally.

That's because we had a crap defence and not because of poor attacking play. That fact plus we also had a ploughed up mud bath of a pitch didn't actually fit a skilful passing game. I don't fancy Brighton's chances of playing their style of football on our old pitch.Up the Junction wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 3:12 pm One can only imagine what you'd have been posting were KUMB around in 1978 when Lyall's West Ham were relegated with those two and the likes of Billy Bonds. Pop Robson and Frank Snr in the squad... I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been references to "wonderful football"...
Our pitch was worse than Man City during that time.
Do you find our old style more exciting and skilful than Brighton?

That pitch is a thing of beauty
Apparently we had someone called Peter Grotier in goal for us that day. Who on earth is that?

A bit harsh Crouchy. Peter Grotty, as he was colloquialy named, was really a pretty decent keeper.

If I remember right, wasn't he vying with Mervyn Day for the shirt? I might be misremebering that but I remember the moustache!

Re: ⚽ Brighton & Hove Albion vs West Ham Utd: match thread
and although it may be a bit of a myth, Pep instilled that on his Barcelona squad when he was there which carries over to today's team, which is hardly surprising seeing as they have Xavi there, and that's when you lose possession you've got 6 seconds to win it back.
our lot take about 6 minutes. if that quick. and when we do get it, why we give it right back to the other team again.
don't know how many times I post on here, "you can't score if you ain't got the ball, and your opponent has the opportunity to if they do."
and all I get in response is "I hate tippy tappy football..."
well you don't ever have to worry about that these days.

It's been a long journey since the 70's, so when those of us of a certain vintage say that Saturday was one of the worst we can remember, there is an awful lot of context and very little exaggeration.Crouchend_Hammer wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 3:41 pm Apparently we had someone called Peter Grotier in goal for us that day. It was a truly excruciating performance and there can be no excuses. I was disgusted.

Yep, me too. I can take losing, even getting thrashed, but it is getting thrashed because we surrendered possession that I can't take. If we had attacked from the off and been hit 4-0 on the break it would be easier to take. But we never looked like giving it a go, not even for a minute.Bonzos4Lagers wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 4:51 am It's been a long journey since the 70's, so when those of us of a certain vintage say that Saturday was one of the worst we can remember, there is an awful lot of context and very little exaggeration.

Re: ⚽ Brighton & Hove Albion vs West Ham Utd: match thread
This makes the decision to switch to a high press against Brighton all the more confusing, as normally we are much more passive until 30 yards out. There were a couple times that our press caused minor errors, but Brighton figured it out very quickly. It didn't just seem like it, they really were goading our attacking players to press.

Thanks and very instructive.WE need our players to be able to receive the ball under pressure and that is about coaching and confidence.
